BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh EV charger: which one fits best?

The BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh Active and Boost charge at home with up to 7.4 kW. This Dolphin has a single-phase on-board charger, so it uses one of the phases of your supply. You reach the full 7.4 kW only on a charger that delivers 32 amps (A) on that one phase. A 22 kW charger does not make this car charge any faster. Our BYD EV charger overview links through to every BYD model and version we cover.

For the BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh?

Because the Dolphin charges on one phase, the charger has to put 32 A on that phase. A three-phase charger of 11 kW uses all three phases of your supply and delivers 3 x 16 A. This car takes one of those three phases, so it drops to 3.7 kW. That is half its speed, which is why our 11 kW EV chargers are not the right starting point here.

Two features do matter for this car. Dynamic load balancing measures what your home already uses and hands the rest to the charger. On a single-phase car that is how you get the most out of that one phase. You will find them under our EV chargers with dynamic load balancing. An EV charger with an app lets you set charging times and follow every session on your phone.

There is one thing you will not find at this power level. At 7.4 kW our range does not carry a charger with a built-in calibrated meter, a MID meter. That meter sits inside the charger, so it separates your charging from your household consumption. The calibration makes that reading legally valid rather than an estimate.

You will find this meter in our 11 kW and 22 kW ranges. A 22 kW charger carries 32 A per phase, so this car still reaches its full 7.4 kW there. Browse the chargers with a MID meter if that reading matters to you.

Chargers in our home EV charger range mount on a wall and connect to your fuse box. You can also have your choice checked by our team free of charge before you order.

How long does the BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh take to charge?

At 7.4 kW you charge the 44.9 kWh battery in about six hours. That is the plain sum: 44.9 divided by 7.4. Plug the car in during the evening and it is full in the morning. A charger above 7.4 kW does not speed this Dolphin up, because the single-phase on-board charger sets the limit.

A charger at home supplies AC, or alternating current. The on-board charger converts it to DC, or direct current, for the battery. On the road you charge at a fast charger of up to 60 kW DC. That fast charger sends the direct current straight into the battery, past the on-board charger. You can safely charge the LFP battery, a lithium iron phosphate pack, to 100 percent on a regular basis. That is good for this battery type.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BYD Dolphin 44.9 kWh need a three-phase EV charger?

No. The Dolphin 44.9 kWh charges on one phase at up to 7.4 kW. A 22 kW model buys you no extra speed. You reach the full 7.4 kW only when the charger puts 32 A on one phase. On a standard three-phase 11 kW charger the speed drops to 3.7 kW. Load balancing does not change that, because the car can only use one phase.

We recommend having the connection made by a certified installer. That is safer, and it matters for your insurance. We can arrange the installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and you will find the details on our installation page.

Why is a MID meter important?

A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter inside the charger. It counts only the power you put in the car, so your charging costs stay separate from the rest of your bill. Calibration is what makes that count hold up as proof rather than an estimate. At 7.4 kW our range does not carry one. Look at the 11 kW and 22 kW ranges if you want it.
