Which EV charger fits the Volkswagen e-Golf?

This e-Golf accepts only 3.7 kW, so you do not need an expensive charger. An 11 kW unit still makes sense as a long-term choice. It costs a little more now and is ready for a faster car later. Our 7.4 kW EV chargers cost less and still deliver more than this e-Golf can take.

Look for a built-in MID meter whichever power you pick. An MID meter is a certified kWh meter. It records every session to the kilowatt-hour, so you see exactly what home charging costs you.

The e-Golf has a Type 2 socket, like almost every modern charger. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable for public charge points, or for a charger with a socket instead of a fixed cable.

How long does the Volkswagen e-Golf (2014-2016) take to charge?

The usable battery holds 20.5 kWh. On a 3.7 kW charger it goes from empty to full in about 6 hours 45 minutes. A straight 20.5 divided by 3.7 gives 5.5 hours, and charging losses account for the rest. Plug in during the evening and the car is ready in the morning.

A household socket at 2.3 kW takes roughly 10 hours. A wall charger saves you real time. On the road you fast charge over the CCS connector, the fast-charge plug below the Type 2 socket, at up to about 44 kW.

Does the Volkswagen e-Golf (2014-2016) need a three-phase connection?

No. This e-Golf charges at up to 3.7 kW on a single phase, so a single-phase charger is enough. A three-phase model works too. Three-phase means your supply reaches the charger over three live wires instead of one. It will not charge this car any faster, but it is useful if you expect a quicker EV later.

Why does an MID meter matter?

A certified kWh meter records your charging to the kilowatt-hour. You see exactly what a session cost, and you can hand the same reading to an employer or lease company. In the Netherlands it is also the condition for the reimbursement scheme that starts in 2026. Even on a small battery the meter is what makes that scheme work, so it is worth having from day one.
