What is a Smappee EV Charger with MID meter?
A MID meter is a certified kilowatt-hour meter that complies with the European Measuring Instruments Directive. The measurement is legally valid, comparable to the smart meter in your electrical cabinet. This provides clear proof of exactly how much electricity has been charged into your vehicle.
Smappee integrates the MID meter directly into the charging station as standard. The Smappee EV Wall Eichrecht model even complies with the German Eichrecht standard, using cryptographically signed measurement data. For the Dutch market, a class B MID meter is sufficient for ERE certificates and business reimbursement.
Who is a Smappee MID EV Charger suitable for?
- Self-employed professionals and employees who reimburse charging costs. The MID meter provides legally valid proof for each charging session.

Business reimbursement and ERE certificates
Business reimbursement requires certified measurement. A standard charging station counter is not sufficient for tax authorities or employers. A MID meter provides this legally valid measurement as standard.
For ERE certificates, from 2026 every registered charging station must be MID-certified. You register the charger through a booking service provider, who handles registration and payment. Compensation is paid periodically based on the actual charged kWh and applies retroactively within the calendar year. Combining Smappee with solar panels and a home battery
The Smappee P1 meter in your electrical cabinet sends real-time consumption data to the charging station. If the cooker, heat pump and washing machine are all using power at the same time, the charger automatically adjusts its output. When household consumption is low, charging speed increases again.
With the Smappee Smart Kit, you preferably charge using electricity generated by your own solar panels. If you combine this with a home battery, the Smappee system automatically optimises between direct consumption, storage and EV charging. Everything can be controlled via the Smappee app, with insight per charging session and per energy source.
ISO 15118 and Plug & Charge
Smappee builds support for ISO 15118 into its newer product line, including the EV Ultra. This communication standard enables Plug & Charge: your vehicle identifies itself securely to the charger and the charging session starts automatically without a charging card or app. For business use, this is useful because every session is immediately linked to a specific vehicle and registered through the MID meter. ISO 15118 also forms the basis for V2G and V2H, allowing your vehicle to feed electricity back to your home or the grid.
Frequently asked questions about Smappee MID EV Chargers
Is a MID meter required for ERE certificates?
Yes. Booking service providers only accept charging stations with an integrated MID meter for the ERE scheme. An external kWh meter in the electrical cabinet is not sufficient, because it does not specifically measure what is charged into the vehicle.
What is the difference between MID and Eichrecht?
MID is the European standard for certified measurements, while Eichrecht is the stricter German implementation with encrypted measurement data. For the Dutch ERE scheme and business reimbursement, MID class B is sufficient. Eichrecht is mainly relevant if you operate public charging points or invoice charging sessions in Germany.
