BMW iX xDrive40 EV charger: which one fits best?
The BMW iX xDrive40 was the entry-level version of the first iX generation. At home it charges at up to 11 kW alternating current through a Type 2 port. That single figure decides which EV charger suits this car. An 11 kW model uses the full charging power, while a faster charger buys you nothing. Check the figure in your vehicle documents or on the car's display, because the on-board charger can differ per model year. Our overview of every BMW EV charger page shows the other versions side by side.
For the BMW iX xDrive40 we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the BMW iX xDrive40?
The iX xDrive40 accepts up to 11 kW at home. An 11 kW charger on a three-phase connection is therefore exactly what you need. A three-phase connection spreads the current over three phases, so you charge faster without overloading your fuse box.
Consider an EV charger with a built-in MID meter. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records your charging on its own. You then see what home charging costs you, separately from the rest of your electricity use. Check the power rating on the product page before you order, because that category covers several power levels.
Does your household draw a lot of power, through a heat pump or an induction hob? Then pick a charger with load balancing. The charger keeps measuring how much current your fuse box still has free. It lowers the charging power when it has to, so your main fuse never trips. Browse all 11 kW EV chargers, or compare the EV chargers with dynamic load balancing side by side.
How long does the BMW iX xDrive40 take to charge?
The iX xDrive40 has a usable battery of 71 kWh. On an 11 kW charger you can count on roughly 6.5 hours from empty to full. Charging losses make the real session a little longer than that sum. In practice you rarely charge from 0 to 100 percent. Plug the car in during the evening and it is ready long before you leave. The WLTP range is around 425 km, measured in the standard European test cycle. You normally top up only part of the battery. Most owners simply plug in overnight, and our home EV chargers are the straightforward starting point for that.

Frequently asked questions
Does the BMW iX xDrive40 need an EV charger with a MID meter?
The car does not need one in order to charge. A charger with a MID meter still earns its place. Because the meter is certified, it records every charging session on its own. You see what a session actually costs, without picking it out of your total electricity bill afterwards. In our range you will find that meter on 11 kW models too, which is exactly the power this car uses.
Does the BMW iX xDrive40 need a three-phase connection?
To reach the full 11 kW you need a three-phase connection of 3x16 amps. On a single-phase connection the charging power drops and a full charge takes considerably longer. Your vehicle documentation gives the exact single-phase figure for your car.
Whether you can move up to three phases depends on your grid operator and on the country you live in. Check that locally before you order. We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer and it matters for your insurance.
Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. Our installation page sets out what that covers. Outside those three countries you arrange the work yourself, even though we ship worldwide.
