Volkswagen Passat GTE and Golf GTE EV charger: which one fits best?

The Volkswagen Passat GTE and Golf GTE are plug-in hybrids that charge at home on alternating current. Both use an onboard charger of 3.6 kW on a single phase. That figure decides the rest: your car never draws more than 3.6 kW, not even from a faster charge point. A simple wallbox is therefore plenty for both GTE models. Our overview of all Volkswagen EV chargers shows what fits the other versions.

For the Passat GTE and Golf GTE we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Charging power can differ per model year and market. Check your car papers or the dashboard display if you are unsure what your GTE takes.

Which EV charger suits a Volkswagen GTE?

Both GTE models charge at 3.6 kW on a single phase, so a fast 22 kW unit adds nothing. A single-phase wallbox is exactly what you need: affordable, simple and much quicker than a household socket. Charging stays at 3.6 kW either way, so paying for more power buys you no time.

One thing to know about our 7.4 kW range: none of those chargers has a built-in MID meter. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charge point. It records what you charge at home separately from the rest of your electricity use. That way you know exactly what charging costs. In our range that meter starts at 11 kW. You will find it in our EV chargers with a MID meter, not at 7.4 kW.

For your GTE a 7.4 kW EV charger is more than enough, because the car stays at 3.6 kW. If this is your first charge point, our home EV chargers gather the models built for a domestic connection.

How long does a Passat GTE or Golf GTE take to charge?

A battery of around 13 kWh at 3.6 kW takes about four hours for a full charge, charging losses included. Plug the car in during the evening and it is full the next morning. A faster charge point does not change that, because the onboard charger of the GTE sets the limit. A household socket takes longer, around six hours, and that is less safe for daily use.

Does my GTE need a special charging cable?

Both models have a Type 2 inlet, just like almost every modern charge point. At home you charge through the charger's own fixed cable. A matching Type 2 charging cable is only needed at a public charge point.

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician, which is safer and matters for your insurance. We arrange EV charger installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. In Germany that runs through a free quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Passat GTE or Golf GTE need a three-phase EV charger?

No. Both GTE models charge at 3.6 kW on a single phase. A single-phase charger is enough, and a three-phase unit of 11 or 22 kW will not charge your GTE any faster.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter?

That depends on what you want to do with the figures. A MID meter records your charging in a certified way, separately from the rest of your electricity use. That helps if you want to know exactly what charging costs, or if someone else reimburses those costs. In our range the meter starts at 11 kW, so a 7.4 kW charger for your GTE does not have one.
