BMW 530e xDrive EV charger: which one fits best?

The BMW 530e xDrive charges at home at 3.7 kW through a Type 2 connector. This page is about the G30 version, sold from 2019 to 2023. It is a plug-in hybrid with a 12.0 kWh gross battery. It asks for a dependable charger, not a quick one. Our overview of BMW EV chargers covers the rest of the range, and the BMW 530e plug-in hybrid without xDrive charges the same way.

For the BMW 530e xDrive we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the BMW 530e xDrive?

First, check your build year. BMW has sold a 530e xDrive on the new 5 Series since 2024. That car has a much larger battery, around 19.4 kWh usable, and it charges faster on AC. Everything below applies to the 2019 to 2023 car.

An EV charger supplies current per phase. A 7.4 kW model gives 1 x 32 A. An 11 kW model gives 3 x 16 A, a 22 kW model 3 x 32 A. The 530e xDrive uses a single phase and takes 16 A at most. All three therefore hand this car exactly 3.7 kW. A bigger charger does not charge this car any faster. That limit sits in the car, not in the charger.

So the choice is really about your next car. An 11 kW charger already carries three phases, which simply means three live wires instead of one. A fully electric car parked on your drive in a few years can use all of it. That is the whole reason we point at 11 kW here, and it has nothing to do with speed today.

One point deserves honesty before you choose: the MID meter. That is a calibrated kWh meter inside the charger. It measures the electricity you charge at home separately from your household use, so you know what driving actually costs you. Our chargers with a MID meter sit almost entirely in the 22 kW range. At 11 kW the choice is very thin, and you will find that charger in the MID listing rather than in the 11 kW one. At 7.4 kW we carry none at all.

If the calibrated meter matters more to you than anything else, look at the 22 kW EV chargers. Be clear about what you are buying though. A 22 kW charger buys you the meter, not extra speed for this car.

App control is available across all three power levels. You can start a session or set a schedule from your phone. The same goes for dynamic load balancing. The charger then lowers its own power when the rest of the house draws a lot. Both are worth having on a car you plug in almost daily.

Browse all 11 kW EV chargers to see what that class offers. If you would rather keep it simple and stay on one phase, the 7.4 kW EV chargers serve this car just as well. Our home charging page explains how to pick between them.

How long does the BMW 530e xDrive take to charge?

Empty to full takes about 3 hours and 35 minutes on a 3.7 kW EV charger. That is BMW's own figure and it includes charging losses. Divide the usable battery by the charging power and you land on roughly three hours, so the gap is real. Plug the car in during the evening and it is ready long before you leave. A heavier charger changes nothing, because the car itself caps at 3.7 kW.

The 2019 to 2023 BMW 530e xDrive charges through a Type 2 connector and has no DC fast charging. At home you charge through the charger itself. Some public charging points come without a cable. A loose Type 2 charging cable covers that.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BMW 530e xDrive need a three-phase connection?

No. The 530e xDrive built between 2019 and 2023 charges on one phase at 3.7 kW, so a single-phase supply is enough. A three-phase 11 kW charger works perfectly well, but it gives this car no extra speed. The gain is future-proofing, because a fully electric car will use those extra phases.

Why does a MID meter matter for the 530e xDrive?

A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter built into the charger. It separates the electricity you charge at home from the rest of your household use. For a plug-in hybrid that you top up almost every day, that clarity adds up. Do check the power class before you order. In our range the calibrated meters sit mainly at 22 kW. At 11 kW the choice is very thin, and at 7.4 kW there is none.

Should an electrician connect the EV charger?

We recommend having a qualified electrician connect your charger. That is the safe route and it protects your home wiring. Wallbox Discounter ships worldwide, but we install in three countries only: the Netherlands, Flanders in Belgium and Germany. In the Netherlands and Flanders you book installation with your order. In Germany it runs through a free quotation. Our installation page shows what each option covers.
