Porsche Taycan Plus EV charger: which one fits best?
The Porsche Taycan with Performance Battery Plus is one of the few EVs that can beat 11 kW at home. As standard the car charges at 11 kW on alternating current. With the optional 22 kW on-board charger it draws the full AC power from a three-phase connection, so three live wires instead of one. That makes your charger choice more interesting than average. Which EV charger suits the Porsche Taycan Plus?
The answer depends on your on-board charger. With the standard 11 kW unit an 11 kW charger is all you need, because the car never goes faster. With the optional 22 kW unit a 22 kW charger is worth the money. You halve your charging time compared to 11 kW. Either way you need a three-phase connection.
A second question decides just as much: do you want to know what charging costs you? A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records your charging sessions separately from the rest of your household use. Your home charging cost no longer disappears into the monthly energy bill. Across our chargers with a MID meter the feature is common at 22 kW. At 11 kW the choice is smaller, so check the spec sheet before you order.
Two more features are worth weighing on a car that charges for hours at a time. Load balancing keeps your circuit safe when the house is busy. How long does the Porsche Taycan Plus take to charge?
You work out the charging time from the usable 83.7 kWh battery divided by the charging power. An 11 kW charger brings you to roughly 7.5 hours for a full battery, which suits overnight charging. With the optional 22 kW on-board charger and a three-phase connection you fill the Taycan Plus in about 4 hours. The 800 volt architecture also makes the car exceptionally quick at a direct current (DC) rapid charger, up to 270 kW. That is a motorway stop, not something you do at home.

Can the Porsche Taycan Plus really charge at 22 kW at home?
Only with the optional 22 kW on-board charger. As standard the Taycan Plus charges at 11 kW on alternating current. Did you order the 22 kW unit? Then you use that power with a 22 kW charger. You need a three-phase connection of 32 amps per phase.
Do I need a three-phase connection?
For the full charging power, yes. Both 11 kW and 22 kW are three-phase figures. A single-phase connection leaves a large part of that power unused. Ask an electrician what your fuse board carries today and what an upgrade would involve. What that costs and how it is arranged differs per country.
