An EV Charger with app gives you control right from your pocket: start charging sessions, monitor energy consumption, create schedules and charge at the cheapest time of the day. At Wallbox Discounter, you can choose from more than 10 brands with app control, competitively priced from entry-level models with remote monitoring and control. You can order the charger separately or including installation by a certified electrician.

What can you do with an EV Charger app?

The app of a smart EV Charger connects your vehicle, your charging station and your energy contract. A good app allows you to see in real time how much energy is being charged, how long the session will take and what it costs. You receive a notification when your vehicle is fully charged and can schedule charging sessions during off-peak hours. Models with RFID management allow you to create user profiles, making it easy to track who charged, when and how much energy was used.

The most important question is whether you mainly want insight into your charging behaviour or whether you want to actively optimise charging costs and energy sources. The answer determines which features and which brand suit you best.

Features that really make a difference

Not every app offers the same functionality. These are the features that provide the greatest value:

  • Dynamic charging: The charger connects to your dynamic energy tariff and automatically charges during the hours with the lowest electricity prices. Easee, Smappee, Zaptec, Myenergi (Zappi) and selected Ratio models support this functionality.
  • Solar charging: The app adjusts charging power based on the electricity generated by your solar panels. This is particularly relevant for homeowners with solar installations. Myenergi Zappi, Smappee and Wallbox Pulsar offer some of the most advanced solar charging features.
  • Load balancing: Using a P1 port or CT clamps, the charger prevents your main fuse from tripping by automatically adjusting charging power. This is standard on Peblar, Easee (with Equalizer), Ratio and Zaptec chargers.
  • Charging session export: Useful for company car drivers and business users. Charging sessions can be exported for reimbursement and reporting purposes.
  • Plug & Charge via ISO 15118: A modern communication standard between vehicle and charger. The vehicle automatically authenticates itself, allowing charging to start without a charging card or app interaction. Supported by models including the Easee Charge Pro, Zaptec Go 2, Wallbox Pulsar Pro, Alfen Eve Pro-line and Smappee EV Ultra. ISO 15118 also forms the foundation for future Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technologies.

Best brands for app control

Based on app functionality, four brands stand out from the rest. Easee offers a clean interface with charging schedules, RFID management and Tibber integration, making it an excellent choice for residential users. Wallbox provides extensive insights and strong solar integration through the myWallbox app. Smappee goes even further by combining EV charging with complete home and business energy management. Zaptec focuses on business users and offers advanced user management and back-office integrations.

For solar charging specifically, Myenergi Zappi is one of the best choices available. Its three charging modes (Fast, Eco and Eco+) determine how strongly the charger prioritises self-generated solar energy.

What should you consider when choosing?

A charging app is only as reliable as its connection. Most chargers connect via Wi-Fi, while some models also support Ethernet or built-in mobile connectivity. This can be particularly important if your charger is installed in a garage or another location with a weak Wi-Fi signal. Easee, for example, comes with an integrated SIM card that works throughout Europe at no additional cost.

You should also consider the following:

  • Availability for both iOS and Android
  • How frequently the manufacturer releases app updates
  • Whether the app is free or requires a subscription (most are free)
  • Availability of an open API for integration with Home Assistant or custom energy dashboards

You can find more background information in our guides to smart EV Chargers and EV Chargers with Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subscription to use the app?

For almost all brands in our range, the app is completely free to use. An exception may be advanced back-office software for business reimbursement and fleet management, which can involve a monthly subscription fee.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

No. Real-time monitoring, notifications and remote control require an active internet connection. If your internet connection fails, the charger will generally continue charging, but live status information and remote functions will not be available.

Can I use the app for solar charging?

Yes, provided that a P1 port or CT clamps are connected. The charger can then measure how much electricity your solar panels are generating and automatically adjust charging power accordingly. With Myenergi, Smappee and Wallbox Pulsar, this functionality is built in. Other brands may require additional hardware, such as the Easee Equalizer.

Can I manage multiple users?

Yes. Many EV Chargers with app control support RFID authentication or user profiles. This allows multiple drivers to use the same charger while keeping charging sessions and energy consumption separated per user.
