Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance EV charger: Which one is the best fit?
The Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance charges at home at a maximum of 11 kW through a Type 2 connection. This directly determines which EV charger you need: an 11 kW EV charger allows this version to use its full charging capacity. The car cannot charge any faster using AC power. Which EV charger is suitable for the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance?
Because the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance charges at home at a maximum of 11 kW AC, an 11 kW EV charger is the logical choice. A 22 kW charger will not shorten the charging time because the car’s onboard charger limits the power to 11 kW. When making your choice, consider the required smart functions, dynamic load balancing and whether you need an integrated MID meter. A MID-certified meter accurately and verifiably records the charged kilowatt-hours. This is particularly useful for employer or leasing-company reimbursement and for accounting for business charging costs. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands.
| Situation | Recommended EV charger | MID meter | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard home charging | Easee Charge Up 22 kW | No | A compact and intelligent EV charger that automatically supplies the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance with its maximum AC charging power of 11 kW. It offers app control and can be expanded with dynamic load balancing, but it does not have an integrated MID meter. |
| Business use or ERE registration in the Netherlands | Zaptec Go 2 22 kW | Yes | The integrated MID meter accurately and verifiably records the charged kilowatt-hours. This makes the charger suitable for employer or leasing-company reimbursement, business charging and, exclusively in the Netherlands, ERE registration. |
| Budget option without a MID meter | Besen 11 kW | No | An affordable EV charger that provides the required charging power of 11 kW. Without a MID meter, however, it is less suitable when the charged kilowatt-hours must be recorded for certified reimbursement, business accounting or ERE registration in the Netherlands. |

At home, you charge through either the charger’s fixed charging cable or its Type 2 socket. You need a separate Type 2 charging cable when using an EV charger with a socket.
How long does it take to charge the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance?
The ID.5 Pro Performance has a net battery capacity of 77 kWh. With an 11 kW EV charger, a complete charging session takes approximately 8 hours and 15 minutes when charging losses are taken into account. Connect the car in the evening and it will be fully charged again the following morning. Do you also use a heat pump, induction hob or other high-power appliances at home? Choose an EV charger with dynamic load balancing. The system measures the current electricity consumption at your fuse box and automatically adjusts the charging power to prevent the main connection from becoming overloaded.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance require a three-phase connection?
To achieve the full charging power of 11 kW, you need a three-phase connection rated at 3 × 16 amps. If you only have a single-phase connection at home, the charging power is normally limited to a maximum of 3.7 kW and a full charging session takes considerably longer. Your grid operator or installer can check whether your electrical connection can be upgraded to three phases.
Why is a MID meter important for the ID.5 Pro Performance?
A MID-certified kWh meter accurately and verifiably records your charging consumption. This is useful when the charged kilowatt-hours must be reimbursed by an employer or leasing company or accounted for as business charging costs. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands. We recommend having the EV charger installed by a certified installer, as this increases safety and may be important for your insurance coverage.
