MG MG5 EV charger: which one fits best?
The MG MG5 is a fully electric estate car. At home it charges on AC at up to 11 kW, through a Type 2 socket. That ceiling decides your choice. A more powerful charger will not fill the battery any faster, because the car never draws more than 11 kW. Our overview of all MG EV chargers puts the other models side by side.

The MG5 comes with two batteries. The one you have changes the charging time, not the charging power. Both versions charge at up to 11 kW on a three-phase connection.

The right EV charger for the MG MG5
Because the MG5 tops out at 11 kW, an 11 kW charger is the natural match. More power buys you nothing here. Less power just makes the charge take longer. Three features are worth a look for this car.
The first is a MID meter, a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records exactly how much you charge, which helps when you settle sessions with an employer or a lease company. At this power level the choice is limited. Most models in our range of chargers with a MID meter are 22 kW units, so filter on 11 kW before you decide.
The second is dynamic load balancing. The charger measures how much current your home has to spare. When other appliances draw more, it lowers the charging power automatically. The third is app control. An EV charger with an app lets you start a session on a cheap rate. Afterwards you can check how many kWh went into the car. If you simply want a solid unit for home, start with our EV chargers for home use.
Charging times of the MG MG5
On an 11 kW charger the Standard Range needs about 5 hours from empty. The Long Range takes about 6 hours and 15 minutes. Both figures include charging losses, so they run higher than battery capacity divided by charging power. Plug in during the evening and the car is ready in the morning.
Only a single-phase connection at home? Then the MG5 charges at up to 7.4 kW and the Long Range needs roughly 9 hours and 15 minutes. The car uses a Type 2 inlet, the same connector as almost every charger in Europe. For public charge points you need your own type 2 charging cable.

Does the MG MG5 need a three-phase connection to charge quickly?
For the full 11 kW it does. On a single-phase connection the MG5 charges at up to 7.4 kW, no matter how powerful the charger is. Whether three phases are available at your address depends on the grid in your country. Ask your local network operator what an upgrade involves.
Do I need a charger with a MID meter?
You need one as soon as you want to prove how much you charged at home. A certified meter turns that into a figure your employer or lease company accepts. Charge purely privately and a standard charger is enough. We always advise having the unit connected by a qualified electrician, and we arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany.
