Volkswagen ID.4 Pure Performance EV charger: which one fits best?

The Volkswagen ID.4 Pure Performance charges at home through a Type 2 connection, at a maximum of 7.2 kW AC. That ceiling matters for your choice: on a three-phase supply an 11 kW EV charger gives this version its full 7.2 kW, while a 22 kW charger adds no extra speed. Our overview of all Volkswagen EV chargers covers the other ID.4 versions as well.

For the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure Performance we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure Performance?

The on-board charger of this ID.4 tops out at 7.2 kW. On a three-phase 11 kW charger, which runs on all three phases of your electricity supply, the car uses two of those phases and still reaches its full 7.2 kW. On a single-phase connection you need a 32 A charger, such as a 7.4 kW EV charger, for the same speed; at 16 A the car drops to 3.7 kW. A 22 kW charger works fine as well, but it does not charge this car beyond 7.2 kW. So choose on smart features rather than on power.

An app lets you start, schedule and follow every charging session from your phone, and you will find EV chargers with app at 7.4, 11 and 22 kW. A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter built into the charger. It records the electricity you charge separately from your household consumption, so you know exactly what charging the ID.4 costs you. In our range, a charging station with MID meter starts at 11 kW; our 7.4 kW models do not have one.

How long does it take to charge the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure Performance?

You calculate the charging time by dividing the usable battery capacity by the charging power. With 52 kWh and 7.2 kW that comes to just over 7 hours on paper, but charging losses add time, so expect around 8.5 hours from empty to full. On a 3.7 kW charger it takes about twice as long, close to 17 hours. For most drivers that is no problem: you charge overnight and leave in the morning with a full battery and around 345 km of WLTP range.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ID.4 Pure Performance need a three-phase connection?

No. This version charges at a maximum of 7.2 kW, and a 7.4 kW charger on a dedicated single-phase 32 A circuit already delivers that full speed. On a three-phase connection the car uses two phases and also reaches 7.2 kW, but not more. Three-phase therefore does not make this ID.4 charge any faster.

Why is a MID meter useful for my ID.4?

A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter that registers your charging consumption accurately. You see what your home charging costs, separately from the rest of your electricity bill. Always have the connection made by a qualified electrician: it is safer, it matters for your insurance and local rules may require it. Wallbox Discounter can arrange the installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany (in Germany through a free quote); see our options for an EV charger including installation.
