The Tesla Model X P90D charges at home on alternating current, up to 11 kW. That figure comes from the standard on-board charger, and it caps everything that follows. A heavier charger will not speed this car up, because the car sets the pace. Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model X P90D?

The on-board charger accepts 11 kW at most. An 11 kW charger on a three-phase supply is therefore the logical match. A 22 kW model will not fill this car any faster, so you would pay for power the car never uses.

Look closely at the meter next. A MID-meter is a certified kWh meter. It records exactly what your car has drawn, separately from the rest of your household. In our view that is no longer a luxury. Buy a charger without one and you give up money you could have kept.

The reasons hold wherever you live. A certified meter shows what charging actually costs you, and it is the document an employer or leasing company accepts. In the Netherlands there is a third reason: private drivers can claim back up to 500 euro a year through their energy supplier from 2026. That scheme is available in the Netherlands only, and it needs a certified meter. Every model that has one sits in our EV chargers with a MID-meter.

Two more features are worth weighing up for a car this size. Load balancing means the charger checks how much power your fuse box has left. How long does the Tesla Model X P90D take to charge?

On an 11 kW charger with a three-phase supply, the usable 85.5 kWh pack goes from empty to full in about 9 hours. That figure includes charging losses. In practice you plug in during the evening and the car is ready in the morning.

A single-phase supply changes that picture. On a 16 A single-phase circuit the P90D draws 3.7 kW, and a full charge stretches past a day. On a 32 A single-phase circuit it manages 7.4 kW, or close to 14 hours. For a heavy SUV with a pack this size, a three-phase supply is worth the effort.

The P90D uses a Type 2 connector, the same as the chargers themselves. At home you simply charge through the charger's own fixed cable or socket.
