Why does the ID.3 Pure charge slower than the other versions?
The ID.3 Pure is the entry model of the ID.3 range. The Pro, the Pro S and the GTX carry a three-phase on-board charger good for 11 kW. The Pure uses a two-phase unit that stops at 7.2 kW. The limit sits in the car, not in the charger you buy.
That has one practical consequence worth knowing. A three-phase 11 kW charger supplies 16 amps on each of three phases. The Pure draws two of them, so it reaches its full 7.2 kW and leaves the third phase unused. Buying a more powerful unit will not speed this car up. An 11 kW charger costs you nothing in speed either.
Which EV charger suits the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure?
Because the Pure tops out at 7.2 kW, the question is not how much power you buy. It is which features you get for your money, and how well the charger fits a future car. A three-phase 11 kW unit gives you the Pure's full speed today and headroom if your next car charges faster.
One feature to weigh is the built-in MID meter. That is a calibrated kWh meter. It records exactly how much energy goes into your car, separate from the rest of your household use. Be realistic about the choice, though. Our EV chargers with a MID meter are three-phase only. At 11 kW the selection is narrow. On a single-phase 7.4 kW unit a certified meter is not available at all. That alone is a good reason to look at the three-phase class.
Two features do more for you day to day. Load balancing means the charger watches how much current the house is using. When demand rises, it lowers the charge power for the car. How long does the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure take to charge?
The sum is straightforward. A 52 kWh battery divided by 7.2 kW comes out at roughly 7.5 hours, from nearly empty to full. Plug the car in during the evening and it is ready in the morning. A more powerful charger will not shorten that. The Pure never draws more than 7.2 kW, whatever you connect it to.
The ID.3 Pure has a Type 2 connector. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable if you want to charge at a public point on the road. At home you charge through the fixed connection on your own unit.

Do I need a three-phase connection for the ID.3 Pure?
It helps. The Pure charges over two phases. A three-phase 11 kW charger gives it the full 7.2 kW and leaves the third phase idle. A more powerful unit adds nothing on top of that, because the car sets the limit.
Why does a MID meter matter on my ID.3 Pure?
A calibrated kWh meter records your charging accurately. It keeps the car separate from the rest of your household use. Then you see exactly what a full battery costs you. Do check availability first: chargers with a MID meter are three-phase, and at 11 kW the choice is narrow.
Can I charge the ID.3 Pure from a normal wall socket?
You can, with a portable charger, but a household socket is a great deal slower. A full battery then takes a large part of the day. For daily use a fixed charger is far more practical. We mainly recommend a portable charger as a backup on the road.
Should I install the charger myself or have it done?
