BYD Han EV charger: which one fits best?
The BYD Han carries a large 85.4 kWh battery but charges at only 6.6 kW at home on alternating current. A big battery combined with modest charging power means a full charge takes a whole night. Which charger fits that? See all BYD EV chargers in our overview.

That may look like overkill for a 6.6 kW car, and the reason is worth reading before you decide. It comes down to phases rather than power.

Why the number of phases matters more than the power
This is the key point for the Han, and it works the opposite way round to what most people expect. The car has a single-phase on-board charger. A phase is one of the three power lines running into your fuse box. This car uses only one of them, at 29 amps.
An 11 kW charger delivers three phases at 16 amps each. The Han takes just one of those, so it never gets past 16 amps. That works out at 3.7 kW, not 6.6 kW. A full charge then stretches from roughly 15 hours to around 27 hours.
A 22 kW charger delivers three phases at 32 amps each. The Han still takes one phase, but that phase now carries the full 29 amps it wants. So it reaches its complete 6.6 kW, exactly as it would on a single-phase 7.4 kW charger.
Put plainly: the Han charges fastest on a 7.4 kW or a 22 kW charger, and slowest on an 11 kW one. That middle step is the one to avoid.
Which EV charger suits the BYD Han?
Two charging powers give this car its full speed. The choice between them comes down to what the charger offers besides power.
Our 7.4 kW EV chargers reach the full 6.6 kW and are the simplest option. What that range does not have is a certified meter.
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records exactly how much electricity your car takes. So you see what home charging costs, separately from the rest of your household use. With a battery this size that is a meaningful figure. Our EV chargers with a MID meter are available at 22 kW, but not at 7.4 kW. That is what tips the choice.
A 22 kW charger also keeps its value if your next car charges on three phases.
A long charge makes two other features useful. Load balancing lowers the charger's power automatically when the rest of your house draws a lot. That matters when the car is plugged in all night. The Han uses a Type 2 connector, like most modern chargers. At home you charge through the charger's own connection. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable to charge away from home.

How long does the BYD Han take to charge?
85.4 kWh divided by 6.6 kW comes to roughly 13 hours on paper. Count on about 15 hours in practice from empty to full, because charging always loses some energy along the way.
You plan that as an overnight charge: plug in during the evening and the car is full in the morning. Top up only what you used during the day and you are finished far sooner. On an 11 kW charger the same full charge takes around 27 hours, which no longer fits a night.
For longer trips the Han has a fast DC connection of 120 kW. Charging on the road is a different story altogether. The modest 6.6 kW applies only to alternating current at home.

On a 22 kW charger it does reach its full 6.6 kW. On an 11 kW charger it does not: that unit gives 16 amps per phase, and the Han uses a single phase, so it drops to 3.7 kW. A 7.4 kW or a 22 kW charger is the right choice.
Does the BYD Han need a charger with a MID meter?
It is not a technical requirement, but it is a sensible one. A certified meter shows exactly what charging at home costs you, separately from the rest of your electricity use. Our 22 kW range offers it; the 7.4 kW range does not.
Should I have the charger installed by a qualified electrician?
We strongly recommend it. A qualified electrician connects the unit safely, which also matters for your insurance. Rules differ per country, so check what applies where you live before you start.
