SEAT el-Born EV charger: which one fits best?

The SEAT el-Born charges at up to 11 kW at home. That runs through a three-phase connection, so three live wires instead of one. It is exactly the power level a fixed charger is made for. An 11 kW charger fills the car overnight without you planning anything. Worth knowing: the el-Born was shown as a concept and reached the market as the Cupra Born. The charging hardware stayed the same. Looking wider? Our overview of SEAT EV chargers covers every model.

For the SEAT el-Born we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the SEAT el-Born?

Because the el-Born accepts 11 kW on alternating current (AC), a three-phase 11 kW charger gets the most out of it. A single-phase 7.4 kW charger is slower than the car can handle. A 22 kW charger adds nothing, because the on-board charger stops at 11 kW. So the power question answers itself here, and the rest of your choice is about features.

Start with the meter. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records what you charge at home separately from the rest of your household use. You know your charging cost instead of guessing at it. In our range of chargers with a MID meter the choice at 11 kW is limited. Check the spec sheet before you order rather than assuming it is there.

Two features matter more than the rest on a car that charges for a full evening. Our chargers with dynamic load balancing measure how much power your home is drawing. They turn the charging power down automatically, so a busy kitchen never trips the circuit. A charger with an app lets you start a session and read your history from your phone.

The el-Born has a type 2 connector, like almost every modern charger. You only need a separate type 2 charging cable when you charge at a public point. At home you charge through the cable or socket of the charger itself. All 11 kW EV chargers in our range are built for this three-phase connection. Our home EV chargers overview puts them side by side on price and features.

How long does the SEAT el-Born take to charge?

With an 11 kW charger the el-Born goes from empty to full in about 5.5 hours. Take the usable 58 kWh and divide it by 11 and you land just under that figure. Plug in at 23:00 and the car is waiting in the morning with its full range of around 420 km. On the road the el-Born rapid charges at up to 100 kW DC, which tops the battery up in a short stop. We always advise having the connection made by a qualified electrician, because that is safer and it matters for your insurance. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and nowhere else. Shipping is worldwide, installation is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SEAT el-Born charge faster with a 22 kW charger?

No. The on-board charger stops at 11 kW AC, so a 22 kW charger adds no speed at home. An 11 kW charger is exactly what you need. It is also cheaper and asks less of your fuse board.

Do I need a charger with a MID meter for the el-Born?

That depends on what you want to know. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records your charging exactly, separate from the rest of your household use. If you want your home charging cost stated precisely, it is worth paying for. At 11 kW only a few models have one built in. The product page states it per charger, so look for it there.

Do I need a three-phase connection for the SEAT el-Born?

For the full 11 kW, yes. That means three phases of 16 amps. With a single-phase connection the el-Born falls back to a maximum of around 7.4 kW. Your local grid operator can tell you what a three-phase connection involves where you live.
