Almost every electric Volkswagen from the ID family charges at 11 kW at home. The older e-Up! and e-Golf stay at 7.2 kW, and the Passat and Golf GTE plug-in hybrids charge at around 3.7 kW. Which EV charger fits your Volkswagen therefore depends on the exact model and on your fuse box. Which EV charger suits a Volkswagen?
Most fully electric Volkswagens from the ID family charge at up to 11 kW on a 3-phase connection. An 11 kW charger therefore gets everything out of these models.
On a 1-phase connection the ceiling depends on your fuse and on the car itself. Expect 3.7 kW at 16 A, and up to 7.4 kW at 32 A for a car that accepts it. The e-Golf reaches its full 7.2 kW on a single-phase 7.4 kW EV charger, and the same 7.2 kW from two phases of a 3-phase charger. The e-Up! Gen 2 only draws that 7.2 kW from two phases at once. It therefore needs a 3-phase charger, such as an 11 kW model. On a 1-phase connection it stays at 3.6 kW, whatever the charger can deliver. Every electric Volkswagen uses a Type 2 connection, the European standard.
Where possible, choose a charger with a built-in MID meter. That is a certified kWh meter. It records your charging separately from the rest of your household use, so you see what driving on electricity really costs. At 7.4 kW no model with a built-in MID meter is available at the moment. From 11 kW they are, although the choice is narrow there too. You have the widest pick among the EV chargers with a MID meter, which are mostly 22 kW models.

What charging power do most Volkswagen cars have?
The fully electric ID models charge at up to 11 kW on a 3-phase connection. That covers the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID. Buzz. The older e-Up! and e-Golf charge at 7.2 kW, although the e-Up! needs two phases to get there. The Passat and Golf GTE are plug-in hybrids and charge at 3.7 kW. Do I need an 11 kW or a 22 kW EV charger for my Volkswagen?
No electric Volkswagen charges faster than 11 kW on alternating current. An 11 kW charger therefore always gets the maximum out of the car. A 22 kW charger will not charge your Volkswagen any faster. It can still be useful if you later drive a car that charges faster. A MID meter is worth looking for either way, so you can see exactly what home charging costs. At 22 kW the choice is wider than at 11 kW.
