Sono Sion EV charger: which one suits you best?

The Sono Sion was the solar-electric car from the German maker Sono Motors. Its announced charging power was 11 kW on alternating current (AC). Worth knowing: Sono Motors ended the Sion programme in February 2023. The car never reached production and was never delivered to customers. The figures on this page are announced prototype specifications, not confirmed production values. Our Sono Motors EV charger overview shows what else we have for this brand.

For the Sion we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Charging specifications of the Sono Sion (announced)

According to the manufacturer, the Sono Sion would charge at up to 11 kW at home. That needs a three-phase connection, which uses all three power phases in your fuse box instead of one. The announced charging data is below. Keep in mind that no production version ever confirmed these values.

SpecificationValue (announced)
Battery capacity54 kWh (around 47 kWh usable)
Max. AC charging power (home)11 kW
Range (WLTP)around 305 km
Charging time with an 11 kW EV chargeraround 5 hours, including charging losses
Charging connectorType 2
DC fast chargingaround 75 kW (CCS)

Which EV charger suits the Sono Sion?

The Sion never reached the road, so this is what would have fitted it. With an announced charging power of 11 kW AC, an 11 kW charger is the logical choice. The car could not charge faster than that at home, so a 22 kW unit brings no advantage.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records what your car takes, separately from the rest of your household use. So you always know exactly what charging at home costs. At 11 kW the choice is narrower than at 22 kW. Our EV chargers with a MID meter show which models have the meter built in.

The Sion carried solar cells across its bodywork. That makes surplus solar charging a logical feature to look for. A charger with this function waits until your panels produce more than the house needs, then sends the surplus to the car. Our EV chargers with solar charging include models at 11 kW. Is this your first charging point at home? Our EV chargers for the home are the easiest place to begin.

How long does the Sono Sion take to charge?

Based on the roughly 47 kWh usable capacity, an 11 kW charger needs around 4.5 hours on paper. Including charging losses, count on around 5 hours. Overnight the battery would have been full. The Sono Sion used a Type 2 connection, the same one almost every modern charger carries. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable if you want to charge away from home. At home you charge from the charger itself, either through its fixed cable or through its socket.

Installing your EV charger

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer, and it can matter for your insurance. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. For Germany that runs through a free quote. An 11 kW charger needs a three-phase connection on its own circuit in the fuse box.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still buy a Sono Sion?

No. Sono Motors ended the Sion programme in February 2023 and has since focused entirely on solar technology for other vehicles. The Sion never entered series production and is not available as a new car.

What charging power did the Sono Sion have?

According to the manufacturer, the Sono Sion would charge at home at up to 11 kW AC. It used a Type 2 connection. That is a common charging power, and almost any 11 kW charger matches it. No finished version ever confirmed these figures, because the car never reached production.
