Tesla Model S 85D EV charger: which one fits best?
The Tesla Model S 85D from 2015 and 2016 charges at home through a Type 2 connection. As standard, this car has an 11 kW onboard charger. Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model S 85D?
For the standard version you choose a three-phase 11 kW charger. Three-phase means the charger uses all three power phases of your home connection, so it charges faster. If you have the optional twin charger, a charger that also delivers 22 kW uses the full power.
Almost every charger we recommend has a built-in MID meter. A MID meter is a certified energy meter that records exactly how much you charge. That matters for one reason. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back up to 500 euro per year on home charging. They claim it back through their energy supplier. How long does the Tesla Model S 85D take to charge?
Base your estimate on the usable battery of 80.8 kWh. On an 11 kW charger the bare sum is 80.8 / 11, which is about 7.5 hours. Including charging losses the realistic time is around 8 hours 45 minutes. That is ideal for charging overnight. A 16 amp socket delivers just 3.7 kW and needs over 21 hours. So a fixed charger is really the better choice. On the road you use a fast charger, where the 85D handles up to 120 kW.
