Polestar 2 Long Range Performance EV charger: which one fits best?

The Polestar 2 Long Range Performance is the quickest version of the Polestar 2. It has two motors, all-wheel drive and 476 hp. None of that changes how it charges at home. Like every other Polestar 2, it uses an onboard charger of 11 kW. So the car's power output does not decide your charger, the onboard charger does. Which EV charger fits the Polestar 2 Long Range Performance?

At home the Performance accepts 11 kW of alternating current. That is the same as every other Polestar 2. A three-phase 11 kW charger therefore gets everything out of the car that it can take. A 22 kW charger does not charge it any faster, because the car's onboard charger sets the ceiling.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records what goes into the car down to the kilowatt hour. With a 79 kWh battery, one full charge is a serious amount of electricity. Seeing that figure on its own tells you what home charging really costs. Your household use stays out of the sum.

One thing to know before you compare: at 11 kW the choice of chargers with a certified meter is narrow. Most models with a built-in meter in our range are 22 kW chargers. That extra capacity will not charge this Polestar any faster, so it only makes sense if the built-in meter is what you are after. Check the specification before you order one of our EV chargers with a MID meter.

Load balancing is worth a look for this car. The charger measures how much power the rest of your home draws. It lowers the charging speed as soon as the connection nears its limit. Pulling 11 kW for more than eight hours is a heavy, steady load. When the rest of the house is drawing a lot of power at the same time, a charger with dynamic load balancing keeps the circuit breaker from tripping.

An app is worth looking for too. It lets you start charging when the rate is lowest, and check afterwards what went in. Our EV chargers with an app offer that. If you do not need an app or load balancing, a straightforward model from our EV home chargers will do the job for this car.

The Polestar 2 uses a Type 2 connector in Europe, the same standard the chargers use. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable when you charge at a public charge point that has a socket instead of a fixed cable.

How long does the Polestar 2 Long Range Performance take to charge?

The maths is simple. The usable 79 kWh divided by 11 kW works out at roughly 7 hours. Count on about 8.5 hours in practice, because charging is never loss free. Plug in at 23:00 and the car is full by morning, even after a long day. In daily use you rarely go from empty to full. Topping up overnight from 30 to 80% takes around 4 hours. On the road you charge on direct current instead, where the Performance takes up to 205 kW.

Does the Polestar 2 Long Range Performance charge faster than the other versions?

Not at home. Every version of the Polestar 2 charges through an 11 kW onboard charger on alternating current. The second motor and the higher output change how the car drives, not how it charges. For your charger choice it makes no difference which Polestar 2 you own.

Does the Polestar 2 Long Range Performance need a three-phase connection?

For the full 11 kW, yes. That takes a three-phase connection of 3 x 16 amps. On a single-phase connection the car still charges well. With 32 amps it reaches 7.4 kW. Only on a 16 amp single-phase supply does it drop to 3.7 kW. So a single-phase home is not a problem. It simply means a longer session. Rules for upgrading a connection differ by country, so ask your local grid operator what applies where you live.

Why does a MID meter matter on a Polestar 2?

A MID certified kWh meter measures your charging sessions accurately. That gives you the cost of home charging as its own number. It is no longer a figure hidden inside your household bill. On a car with a 79 kWh battery that difference is easy to notice. An accurate reading also settles the question if someone else pays for your charging.
