Why a three-phase EV charger does not automatically charge the Tucson PHEV faster

The Tucson PHEV has a single-phase onboard charger. This means the car can only draw electricity through one phase, regardless of how many phases the EV charger can theoretically provide. When connected to an 11 kW charger using three phases at 16A, the vehicle therefore charges at approximately 3.7 kW. A three-phase 22 kW charger can provide up to approximately 7.4 kW through one phase at 32A, provided that the electrical connection and charger configuration support this. The most logical solution is therefore an EV charger that can be connected on a single phase at up to 7.4 kW. This allows the car to use its full AC charging capacity.

How long does it take to charge the Hyundai Tucson PHEV?

The usable battery of approximately 11 kWh can theoretically be charged in around 1.5 hours at a charging power of 7.2 kW. In practice, the actual charging time may be slightly longer due to charging losses and the vehicle’s charging management. Charging from a standard domestic socket at 2.3 kW can take approximately five hours. For a plug-in hybrid with this battery capacity, a portable EV charger connected to a domestic socket is therefore mainly suitable as a backup or emergency solution. A permanently installed EV charger is more convenient and considerably faster. The Tucson PHEV uses a Type 2 connection. To charge at public charging stations without a fixed cable, you need a separate Type 2 charging cable.

Does the Hyundai Tucson PHEV require a three-phase connection?

No. The Tucson PHEV charges on a single phase at a maximum of 7.2 kW. A single-phase 32A connection can provide this full charging capacity. A three-phase installation does not increase the maximum charging power of the vehicle, but it may be useful for a future EV charger or a later electric car.

Why can a MID meter be important for the Tucson PHEV?

A MID-certified kWh meter accurately and verifiably records the electricity used during charging. This is particularly important when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also be used for ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands.
