Which EV charger is suitable for the Tesla Model S Long Range?
The Model S Long Range draws a maximum of 11 kW at home. An EV charger with a higher capacity will therefore not charge this car any faster, making an 11 kW model the sensible choice for most users. Almost every EV charger recommended below has an integrated MID meter. This accurately and verifiably records charging consumption, which is particularly useful when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands.
| Situation | Recommended EV charger | MID meter | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard home charging with a MID meter | Ratio io6 Pro 11–22 kW | Yes | The integrated MID meter enables accurate energy measurement, while the charger provides more than enough capacity for charging the Model S Long Range at 11 kW. |
| Business use or ERE registration in the Netherlands | Alfen Eve Single Pro-line 11 kW | Yes | The integrated MID meter accurately and verifiably records charging sessions. This makes the charger suitable for business reimbursement and may support ERE registration in the Netherlands. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. |
| Budget option | Besen 11 kW | No | An affordable EV charger with sufficient charging capacity. Because it does not have an integrated MID meter, it is less suitable when certified consumption measurement, business reimbursement or ERE registration in the Netherlands is required. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. |
View all 11 kW EV chargers in our range. The Model S Long Range uses a Type 2 connection, just like most modern EV chargers, so you can charge it at home using a permanently installed charger. We always recommend having the connection installed by a qualified electrical installer. This is safer and may be important for your insurance coverage.
How long does it take to charge the Tesla Model S Long Range?
With an 11 kW EV charger, a complete charging session from almost empty to full takes approximately 8.5 hours. This is based on a usable battery capacity of around 95 kWh divided by an 11 kW charging capacity. Connect the car in the evening and it will be fully charged again the following morning. In practice, the large battery is rarely charged from completely empty, so daily top-up charging usually takes considerably less time. For long-distance journeys, you can use DC fast charging at a Supercharger with a charging capacity of up to 250 kW.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Tesla Model S Long Range need a three-phase connection?
A three-phase connection is required to use the full 11 kW charging capacity. The car charges over three phases, so with a single-phase connection the charging capacity is generally limited to a maximum of 3.7 kW. With a three-phase home connection, you can use the full 11 kW and recharge the battery in approximately 8.5 hours.
Why can a MID meter be important for the Tesla Model S Long Range?
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that accurately and verifiably records charging consumption. This is particularly important when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. Because the Model S Long Range has a large battery and annual charging consumption can be considerable, a MID meter also provides a particularly useful overview of the actual electricity costs.
