What do you get for your money with a Cheap EV Charger?
In the budget segment you will mainly find entry-level models from Besen and Loady. These chargers are intentionally simplified: you get a solid base with a Type 2 connection, a choice between 3.7 kW, 7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW charging power, and the option of either a fixed 6-metre cable or a socket version. Some models offer manual load balancing, allowing you to manually set the charging power so your electrical group is not overloaded.
A few examples from this segment:
| Model | Power | Type | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Besen 3.7 kW Type 2 6M | 3.7 kW (1-phase) | Fixed cable | €349 |
| Loady Pulse 7.4 kW Type 2 | 7.4 kW (1-phase) | Fixed cable | €369 |
| Besen 11 kW Type 2 6M | 11 kW (3-phase) | Fixed cable | €398 |
| Loady Pulse 11 kW Type 2 | 11 kW (3-phase) | Fixed cable | €409 |
| Besen 22 kW Type 2 6M | 22 kW (3-phase) | Fixed cable | €549 |
With every model you can choose between a fixed 6-metre cable or a socket version in which you plug in your own charging cable. For a fixed parking spot, an EV charger with a fixed cable is usually the more practical choice.
Who is a Cheap EV Charger suitable for?
Not everyone needs an EV charger with an app, dynamic load balancing and solar integration. A budget entry-level model is a great fit if you:
- Want to charge one electric vehicle at home without complicated settings
- Have a standard 1-phase or 3-phase connection without heavy additional appliances
- Want an affordable way to start home charging and possibly upgrade later
- Do not have solar panels or no need for solar charging
- Do not claim business mileage through ERE registration
For people who drive hundreds of kilometres every day, charge two vehicles simultaneously or want to optimise solar charging, a more advanced model is usually the smarter choice. Read more about that below.
What are you giving up with a Cheap EV Charger?
Let’s be honest: for the lower price, you do give up certain features. Most entry-level models in this segment do not include:
- A MID meter. A MID meter (short for Measuring Instruments Directive) registers charged kWh in a legally certified way. Without MID certification, you cannot claim charging costs for business purposes through ERE registration. Many cheap models do not include this meter as standard. If you do want to claim business charging costs, it is worth choosing an EV charger with MID meter. This can earn you up to €500 per year back on your charged kWh.
- An app for monitoring and scheduling. Planning charging sessions during off-peak hours or monitoring consumption through your smartphone is usually not possible with budget models. The Besen 7.4 kW with app is an exception.
- Dynamic load balancing. Some models do offer manual load balancing, allowing you to manually set the charging power. Automatic dynamic balancing based on real-time household consumption is usually missing.
- Advanced integrations. Integration with solar panels, home batteries or dynamic energy contracts is generally unavailable in this segment.
