Peugeot e-Boxer EV charger: which one fits best?

The Peugeot e-Boxer is a fully electric van that charges at home with up to 22 kW. It needs a three-phase supply for that, which means three live wires instead of one. Few electric cars accept that much power, so the e-Boxer changes what a sensible charger looks like. On a single-phase supply the van charges at 7.4 kW. Choosing the right EV charger for the Peugeot e-Boxer

The e-Boxer takes the full three-phase power, so an 11 kW or 22 kW charger genuinely uses what the van can handle. With the large 70 kWh battery, the step up to 22 kW roughly halves your charging time. A 22 kW charger also stays useful if a second electric van joins the fleet later.

Three features matter more than usual for a van like this one:

  • A MID meter. This is a MID-certified kWh meter, so the reading is accurate enough to settle a bill on. You always know how many kWh went into the van at home. Charging times for the Peugeot e-Boxer

How long a full charge takes depends on your battery and your charger. The figures below include charging losses, so they sit a little above the plain sum of capacity divided by power.

  • 37 kWh: about 5.5 hours at 7.4 kW, about 4 hours at 11 kW, about 2 hours at 22 kW
  • 70 kWh: about 11 hours at 7.4 kW, about 7.5 hours at 11 kW, about 3.5 hours at 22 kW

A three-phase charger therefore fills even the large 70 kWh battery overnight. On the road, a 50 kW rapid charger takes the e-Boxer to 80% in about an hour with the small battery. The e-Boxer has a type 2 port, the same standard used by almost every modern charger. If your charger has a socket instead of a fixed cable, you need a matching type 2 charging cable at home.

Does the Peugeot e-Boxer need a three-phase EV charger?

It does not need one, but it gains a lot from it. On a single phase the e-Boxer charges at 7.4 kW at most. A three-phase charger of 11 or 22 kW uses the full on-board charger and fills the 70 kWh battery far quicker. Is your three-phase supply on the light side? A charger with load balancing still fits, because it turns its power down when other equipment needs it. The full 22 kW normally asks for a 32 A supply on each phase.

Why does a MID meter matter for the e-Boxer?

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records your charging accurately. That answers a simple question: how much electricity did this van actually take at home? Anyone who wants to know their real charging cost benefits from that. It also makes a claim to an employer or a leasing company straightforward. A van covers more kilometres than an average car, so those kWh add up quickly. For the e-Boxer we would pick a charger with a built-in MID meter almost every time.
