The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid charges at home at up to 3.3 kW on a single-phase connection. That is a modest charging speed, so you do not need a powerful or expensive charger. Every wallbox in our range delivers more than enough power for this car. Here the choice is not about speed, but about handy features and a built-in MID meter, a certified kWh meter. For the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers. The car draws at most 3.3 kW, so an 11 kW or 22 kW charger will not charge it any faster.

Charging specifications of the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

The current Prius Plug-in Hybrid (from 2023) has a 13.6 kWh battery and drives up to around 86 km fully electric. Its onboard charger accepts up to 3.3 kW on a single phase. Older versions (2017 to 2022) have a smaller 8.8 kWh battery and charge at about 3.7 kW. Neither version supports DC fast charging, so home charging through a wallbox is the way to fill the battery.

Which EV charger suits the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid?

Because this Prius only asks for 3.3 kW, you never reach the maximum output of a heavy charger. A simple single-phase wallbox is therefore perfectly fine. What does make the difference is the MID meter. This certified kWh meter records exactly how much power your car uses at home. Almost every charger we recommend is available with a built-in MID meter.

That matters. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back up to 500 euro per year through their energy supplier. This applies only to home charging costs, and only with a charger that has a certified kWh meter. Buy a charger without a MID meter now and you leave that saving on the table.

How long does the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid take to charge?

You work out the charging time by dividing the battery capacity by the charging power. For the current Prius that is 13.6 kWh divided by 3.3 kW, so about 4 hours for a full battery. The older version with 8.8 kWh charges at 3.7 kW in around 2.5 hours. A faster charger does not speed this up, because the car decides how much power it accepts. Charging overnight is therefore always more than enough.

Why is a MID meter important for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid?

A MID-certified kWh meter records exactly how much power your car uses at home. From 2026, private drivers in the Netherlands can use this to earn back up to 500 euro per year. That scheme applies in the Netherlands only. Without such a meter you miss that saving. Business drivers also use a MID meter to bill their charging costs accurately.

Do I need a heavy EV charger for the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid?

No. The Prius charges at up to 3.3 kW, so a simple single-phase wallbox is more than enough. An 11 kW or 22 kW charger adds no value for this car, because the onboard charger cannot use that extra power.
