Volkswagen ID.3 GTX EV charger: which one fits best?
The Volkswagen ID.3 GTX and GTX Performance are the sporty top versions of the ID.3. They carry the largest battery in the range: 79 kWh usable. Both charge at home at 11 kW through a three-phase supply. That larger battery makes a full charge longer than on a smaller ID.3. So the charger you pick matters more here than on the rest of the range. A 22 kW unit adds no speed at all. The on-board charger caps the pace at 11 kW. That is the unit in the car that turns alternating current from the grid into direct current for the battery. See all Volkswagen EV chargers in our overview.
For the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which charger fits the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX?
The GTX and the GTX Performance both charge at 11 kW, so an 11 kW EV charger is the right match. Three-phase means the wallbox uses all three phases of your supply, at 16 amps each. Only have a single-phase supply? The ID.3 GTX then takes 32 amps on that one phase and charges at 7.4 kW. A full charge runs to roughly 11 hours instead of 7.
Beyond the power rating, three features are worth weighing. An EV charger with a built-in MID meter carries a calibrated kWh meter inside the unit itself. Because the meter sits there, it counts only what the car takes. That keeps it separate from the rest of the household. And because it is calibrated, the reading is accurate. You therefore know what charging at home really costs. We carry EV chargers with a MID meter at both 11 kW and 22 kW, so this car loses no speed if you want one.
App control is the second. It lets you start charging at the hours when your electricity is cheapest, which suits a car that mostly charges overnight. Load balancing is the third, and a sensible addition on a busy fuse box. The wallbox measures how much capacity your connection has left and lowers its power to match. That keeps the load on your main fuse down.
All the models that fit this car sit on our 11 kW EV chargers page.
How long does the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX take to charge?
The battery holds about 79 kWh and the car charges at 11 kW. A full charge therefore takes around 7 hours: 79 kWh divided by 11 kW. Plug in at the start of the evening and the car is ready well before morning. The ID.3 GTX also supports Plug and Charge to the ISO 15118-2 standard. At an EV charger that supports the same standard, the car identifies itself and starts charging without a card or an app.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference in charging between the ID.3 GTX and the GTX Performance?
None. Both versions have the same 79 kWh battery and charge at 11 kW at home. The GTX Performance delivers more power for sportier driving, but the charging time and the charging advice are identical.
Does the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX charge at 22 kW?
No. The on-board charger caps at 11 kW. A 22 kW EV charger therefore charges this car at the same speed as an 11 kW one. It only adds something if you also charge a second car that does take 22 kW.
Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter?
Not strictly, but it is the simplest way to see what charging really costs you. A calibrated meter inside the unit counts only the car, separate from the rest of the house. We carry these at 11 kW and at 22 kW, so on this car the choice costs you nothing in speed. Below 11 kW our range does not include one.
Does the charge point have to be installed by a professional?
We always recommend having the connection done by a qualified electrician. It is safer, and in many countries your insurer expects a professional installation. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and nowhere else. In the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium you order it together with your charger. In Germany it runs through a free quote, which you can request on our installation page.
