DS 3 E-Tense EV charger: which one fits best?

The DS 3 E-Tense charges at home at up to 11 kW through a type 2 port. With a useable battery of 50.8 kWh it is full again well within a night. That does need a charger on a three-phase connection, the heavier type of supply that carries three live wires instead of one. Which EV charger fits the DS 3 E-Tense?

Because the DS 3 E-Tense takes 11 kW AC at most, an 11 kW charger is the logical choice. A heavier 22 kW model will not charge this car any faster: the car sets the ceiling, not the charger. At 11 kW you get the full charging power the car can take, without paying for capacity it never uses.

The power is settled, so what remains is the features. Three of them matter for this car:

• A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records the electricity that goes into the car separately from the rest of your household use. So you can see exactly what charging costs. In our range the meter sits on three-phase models only, and the choice of chargers with a MID meter at 11 kW is narrow.
• Load balancing means the charger watches how much capacity your home connection has left. When the rest of the house needs power, it charges more slowly instead of tripping a fuse. How long does the DS 3 E-Tense take to charge?

On an 11 kW charger the DS 3 E-Tense goes from nearly empty to full in about 5.5 hours. That figure includes charging losses, so it sits above the plain sum of capacity divided by power. Plug in during the evening and you leave in the morning with a full battery, without planning anything.

If your home has a single-phase connection, the car still charges at up to 7.4 kW. A full charge then takes about 8 hours 15 minutes instead of 5.5. Our 7.4 kW EV chargers cover that situation.
