The Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB, meaning the Pro and GTX with the long wheelbase, charges at home at up to 11 kW AC. With a useable battery of 86 kWh, this is a lot of van to fill. A fixed charger therefore beats a wall socket by a wide margin. Volkswagen has announced bidirectional charging for the ID. Buzz, over a DC connection rather than the AC connection of a home charger. Feeding the house is called vehicle-to-home (V2H); feeding the public grid is vehicle-to-grid (V2G). Which EV charger suits the Volkswagen ID. Buzz LWB?

The van charges at up to 11 kW at home. An 11 kW charger on a three-phase connection therefore gets everything out of it. A 22 kW model does not charge it faster, because the car sets the ceiling. That heavier model only pays off if a faster EV joins the household later, and you can compare those in our 22 kW EV chargers.

Filling 86 kWh several times a week is a serious load on a home connection. That makes dynamic load balancing the feature to look for. Load balancing means the charger measures how much power is free. It then adjusts the charging speed itself, so a full session never trips your main fuse.

The second feature worth checking is an integrated MID meter, a certified kWh meter. It shows exactly what charging the van costs, separate from the rest of your electricity use. The sum is simple: 86 kWh divided by 11 kW. That is roughly 8 hours for a full charge on a three-phase 11 kW charger, so the VW ID. Buzz LWB fits comfortably inside a night. On a single-phase 32 A connection the van still charges at 7.4 kW, which puts a full charge at around 12 hours. Three phases bring that back to about 8 hours.

The ID. Buzz LWB uses a Type 2 connection, like most modern chargers. For public charge points you need a separate Type 2 charging cable. At home you charge through the cable of your own charger, unless that charger has a socket instead of a fixed cable.

For the full 11 kW, yes. On a single-phase 32 A connection the van charges at 7.4 kW, so a full charge takes around 12 hours. With three phases it is full in about 8 hours, which fits comfortably in a night.

Why does a MID meter matter for the ID. Buzz LWB?

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter, so the reading it gives is legally accurate. It separates what goes into the van from what the house uses. With a battery this size you charge a lot at home, so that figure is worth seeing on its own.

Can the ID. Buzz LWB charge bidirectionally?

Not through a home charger yet. Volkswagen has announced bidirectional charging for the ID. Buzz over a DC connection, while a wallbox charges over AC.
