Which EV charger is suitable for the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 1?

The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 1 charges on a single phase at up to 7.4 kW, so a 7.4 kW EV charger provides exactly the power the van can accept. A more powerful 11 or 22 kW charger will not charge this vehicle any faster because the onboard charger determines the maximum charging power. Pay close attention to the connector: the van has a Type 1 connection, while the recommended EV chargers have a Type 2 socket. You therefore need a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable.

Besides the charging power, you should also consider how charging consumption is measured. A MID-certified kWh meter records the electricity used for charging accurately and transparently. This is particularly useful when the Kangoo is used as a company or lease vehicle and the home charging costs need to be reimbursed by an employer or business. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for participation in the ERE scheme. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 1?

With a 7.4 kW EV charger, you can recharge the usable 33 kWh battery from empty to full in approximately 4.5 hours. Do you have a lower-capacity electrical connection at home? With a 3.7 kW charger on a single phase at 16 amps, the charging time increases to approximately nine hours. A mobile charger connected to a standard household socket charges at around 2.3 to 3.7 kW and is therefore mainly suitable as an emergency solution, rather than for the daily use of a commercial van.

Does the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 1 need a 3-phase connection?

No. The Phase 1 only charges on a single phase at a maximum of 7.4 kW. A 3-phase connection will therefore not charge this van any faster. A single-phase 32-amp connection is sufficient, provided enough capacity remains available for the other electrical appliances in your home or business premises. An EV charger with dynamic load balancing automatically adjusts the charging power to the current electricity consumption and helps prevent the main connection from overloading.

Does the recommended EV charger have a MID meter?

The Easee Charge Up does not have an integrated MID meter. The Zaptec Go 2 is equipped with a MID-certified energy meter. This allows you to accurately record charging consumption and transparently reimburse the home charging costs of a company or lease vehicle. In the Netherlands, the MID meter may also make the Zaptec Go 2 suitable for ERE registration. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands. The affordable Loady Pulse does not have a MID meter either.

Do I need a special charging cable for the Kangoo Z.E. Phase 1?

Yes. The van has a Type 1 connection, while the recommended EV chargers have a Type 2 socket. You therefore need a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable with a capacity of at least 7.4 kW. We also recommend having the EV charger connected by a certified installer to ensure that the installation is safe and reliable.
