BMW 330e plug-in hybrid EV charger: which one is the best fit?

The BMW 330e plug-in hybrid charges at home at a maximum of 3.7 kW using a single-phase connection. This limitation is determined by the car’s onboard charger, regardless of which EV charger you install. An 11 kW EV charger therefore charges this 330e just as quickly as a simpler charger, taking approximately three hours for a full charge. The benefit of a more powerful EV charger is therefore not a shorter charging time, but the available functions and future-proofing. Would you like to learn more about the other versions? Which EV charger is suitable for the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid?

Because the 330e will never charge at more than 3.7 kW at home, you should not choose an EV charger based solely on its charging capacity. Functions, reliability and compatibility with a future electric car are more important. Almost every EV charger recommended below has an integrated MID meter. A MID-certified meter accurately and verifiably records the electricity used for charging. This is particularly useful when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands.

With a charger equipped with a fixed cable, the 330e connects directly using the Type 2 plug. To charge the car at a public charging station or an EV charger with a socket, you need a separate Type 2 charging cable.

How long does it take to charge the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid?

Dividing the usable battery capacity of approximately 10.4 kWh by the charging power of 3.7 kW gives a full charging time of approximately three hours when normal charging losses are included. It is important to know that this remains the same when using an 11 kW EV charger. The vehicle will never draw more than 3.7 kW, so a charger with a higher capacity does not reduce the charging time. Connect the 330e in the evening and it will be fully charged well before your next journey. For drivers who mainly cover short daily distances electrically, this charging speed is usually more than sufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid need a three-phase EV charger?

No. The 330e charges at home on a single phase at a maximum of 3.7 kW. A three-phase EV charger will work without any problems, but it will not charge this vehicle faster because the onboard charger determines the maximum charging capacity. A simple single-phase charger is therefore sufficient for this plug-in hybrid. A more powerful EV charger may still be worthwhile if you plan to switch to a fully electric vehicle in the future.

Why can a MID meter be important for the BMW 330e?

An integrated MID meter accurately and verifiably records how much electricity is used to charge the vehicle at home. This is particularly useful when the charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. For exclusively private charging, a MID meter is not essential, but it provides a transparent overview of actual charging consumption.

Should I have the EV charger professionally installed?

We always recommend having the connection installed by a qualified electrical installer. This is safer, ensures that the installation complies with the applicable requirements and may be important for your insurance coverage. You can arrange the installation together with your order.
