From 2017 onwards, the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 received a larger 33 kWh battery, more than 50 percent larger than the battery in the Phase 1. This provides a longer driving range, but charging also takes slightly longer. The van charges at home at a maximum of 7.4 kW via a Type 2 connection on a single phase. Which EV charger is suitable for the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2?

The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 has a 1-phase onboard charger that can accept a maximum of 7.4 kW. An EV charger that supplies 7.4 kW on a single phase will therefore charge this van at the highest possible speed. If you connect it to a 3-phase 11 kW EV charger, the charging power may be limited to 3.7 kW because the vehicle only uses one phase and this type of charger generally supplies a maximum of 16 amps per phase. An EV charger capable of supplying 32 amps on a single phase is therefore the right choice.

When choosing an EV charger, it is important to determine whether you only want to charge quickly at home or also need certified consumption measurement. A MID-certified kWh meter accurately and transparently records charging consumption. This is particularly useful when the Kangoo is used for business purposes and the electricity charged at home needs to be reimbursed by an employer, company or lease provider. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for participation in the ERE scheme. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2?

With a 7.4 kW EV charger, you can charge the 33 kWh battery from empty to full in approximately 4.5 to 5 hours. The theoretical minimum is around 4.5 hours. In practice, charging losses increase the total charging time to approximately five hours. Connect the van after work in the evening and it will be ready the following morning with a fully charged battery. The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 does not support DC fast charging, so charging at home or at work will be your main regular charging option.

Does the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 need an EV charger with a MID meter?

A MID meter is not required for charging itself. However, a MID-certified kWh meter accurately and transparently records charging consumption. Can the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 charge faster than 7.4 kW?

No. The onboard charger of the Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 is a 1-phase charger with a maximum capacity of 7.4 kW. An 11 kW or 22 kW EV charger will therefore not charge this van at more than 7.4 kW. With a 3-phase EV charger that supplies a maximum of 16 amps per phase, the charging power may even be limited to 3.7 kW. A 7.4 kW EV charger, or a charger capable of supplying 32 amps on one phase, makes full use of the vehicle’s charging capacity without making you pay for unused power.
