The Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 received a larger 33 kWh battery from 2017, half as much again as the 22 kWh Phase 1. That takes you further, but it also stretches the charging session. Which EV charger fits the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2?

The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 has a single-phase onboard charger that handles 7.4 kW at most. A charger delivering 7.4 kW over one phase therefore charges this van fastest. Put it on a three-phase 11 kW unit and the charging power drops back to 3.7 kW, because the van only uses one of the three phases. A 22 kW charger will not speed it up either, so paying for that capacity buys you nothing here.

A MID-certified kWh meter records your home charging down to the kWh, which is exactly what an employer or a lease company asks for before they reimburse you. In the Netherlands there is more on offer: since 2026 private drivers can claim back up to 500 euro a year on home charging costs through their energy supplier, and business drivers settle their use through ERE registration. Both need a MID-certified meter, and both apply in the Netherlands only. Our 7.4 kW range has no model with a built-in meter, so if you need that proof you either have a separate certified kWh meter fitted in your distribution board, or pick from the EV chargers with a MID meter. Those will not charge this van any faster, but they supply the reading themselves.

A single-phase 32 A connection puts a heavy load on one circuit in your fuse box. A charger with dynamic load balancing measures how much current is still free and turns the charging power down when the washing machine and the dishwasher run at the same time, so the circuit never trips.

Because the Kangoo sits on the charger for four to five hours in one go, being able to schedule that session pays off. With app control you set the charging to start when your energy tariff is at its lowest, and you can see from indoors whether the van is actually charging. If you want the simplest option, the home EV chargers are the easiest entry point.

How long does the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 take to charge?

With a 7.4 kW EV charger you fill the battery from empty to full in roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. On paper the useable 31 kWh takes a little over four hours; charging losses push the real world towards five. Plug the van in after your working day and it stands ready with a full battery the next morning. The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 cannot DC fast charge, so charging at home or at work is your fixed charging moment.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter for the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2?

Not for the charging itself, but a MID meter earns its place. A MID-certified kWh meter logs your charging accurately, which is what an employer or lease company asks for before they reimburse home charging. Dutch drivers also need it for the national ERE scheme, which reimburses part of their home charging costs. That scheme applies in the Netherlands only. Do bear in mind that our 7.4 kW range carries no built-in meter, so you would pair the charger with a separate certified kWh meter.

Can the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 charge faster than 7.4 kW?

No. The onboard charger is a single-phase unit capped at 7.4 kW. An 11 kW or 22 kW charger will not give this van more than 7.4 kW, and on three phases it actually falls back to 3.7 kW. A 7.4 kW charger on a single-phase 32 A connection gets everything out of the van without you paying for capacity it cannot use.

Which charging connector does the Renault Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 use?

The Kangoo Z.E. Phase 2 charges through a Type 2 connection, the European standard for AC charging. A Type 2 connection is standard on the chargers in our 7.4 kW range. If you also want to charge at public AC points, you need to carry your own type 2 charging cable, because those points do not come with one attached.
