At home, the iX3 uses a Type 2 charging connection, like almost every modern EV charger. You need a separate Type 2 charging cable when using a charger with a socket or at public charge points without a fixed cable.

Which EV charger suits the BMW iX3?

Because the iX3 is limited to 11 kW AC charging, an 11 kW EV charger on a three-phase supply is the logical choice. Three phases at 16 A each provide approximately 11 kW. Any additional charging capacity cannot be used by the iX3 for AC charging.

How long does the BMW iX3 take to charge?

The iX3 has a usable battery capacity of 74 kWh. With an 11 kW EV charger, a full charge from 0 to 100% takes around 8 hours. The theoretical calculation comes to slightly less than 7 hours, but in practice you also need to account for charging losses. Plug the car in during the evening and it will be ready again the next morning.

In practice, you will rarely charge from 0 to 100%. A daily top-up is therefore usually completed within a few hours. A 22 kW EV charger will not make this any faster because the onboard charger of the iX3 accepts a maximum of 11 kW AC.

Can the BMW iX3 charge at 22 kW?

No. The iX3 has an onboard charger that limits AC charging to 11 kW. A 22 kW EV charger will work, but it will not charge your iX3 any faster than an 11 kW charger. DC fast charging at up to 150 kW is available on the road via a compatible DC fast charger, not through your home EV charger.

Does the iX3 need an EV charger with a MID meter?

Technically, no. However, a MID meter can be useful because it records the electricity used for charging accurately and separately from the rest of your household consumption. This makes it easy to see how much electricity your car actually uses.

Do I need a three-phase connection for the iX3?

For the full 11 kW charging power, yes. The iX3 can also charge on a single-phase supply, but it will not reach its full three-phase AC charging power. If 7.4 kW is available on a single phase, a full charge takes roughly 12 hours instead of around 8 hours. Whether this is possible depends on your local electrical installation and grid requirements, so ask a qualified electrician or your grid operator before relying on this configuration.
