The Tesla Model S 70D is one of the dual-motor versions of the Model S. Its battery is on the small side for the range, and at home that works in your favour. The car charges through a Type 2 connection at up to 11 kW. With roughly 70 kWh on board, it is full again by morning. An 11 kW charger is therefore the logical match. Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model S 70D?
At home the Model S 70D draws a maximum of 11 kW through a three-phase connection. A heavier 22 kW charger will not charge this car any faster. The ceiling sits in the car, not in the charger, so 11 kW is exactly what you need.
From there, two features decide which model fits your situation. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter. It measures your charging separately from the rest of your household use. The second is control. With a 66 kWh battery you will mostly charge overnight. An EV charger with an app lets you set that from the sofa. If more than one heavy appliance runs at the same time, an EV charger with dynamic load balancing is worth adding.
Load balancing means the charger keeps measuring how much power your fuse box has left. It then turns itself down instead of tripping the circuit. Our EV chargers for home use are the simplest place to start if you want none of these extras.

How long does the Tesla Model S 70D take to charge?
With an 11 kW charger the Model S 70D goes from empty to full in about 7 to 7.5 hours. That is a little more than 66 kWh divided by 11 kW. Charging losses and the slower final stretch count too. Plug in at 11 pm and you drive off in the morning on a full battery. The full 11 kW does need three phases. On a single-phase connection the car can use only one phase, so it charges considerably more slowly. A three-phase supply is by far the most practical for the 70D.
The Model S 70D has a Type 2 connection, like most modern chargers. At home you charge through the fixed cable or the socket of the charger itself. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable for public charging points on the road.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Tesla Model S 70D need a three-phase connection?
For the full 11 kW, yes. The 70D charges across three phases at home. On a single-phase connection it can use only one phase, so the charging power drops well below that. If you do not have three phases yet, ask your grid operator. They can tell you whether a three-phase supply is possible at your address.
Why does a MID meter matter for the Model S 70D?
A MID meter records your home charging accurately and separately. You can see what a full battery actually costs you, instead of guessing from one household bill. With a 66 kWh battery those sessions add up quickly, so the difference is easy to notice.
Does a 22 kW charger charge the Tesla Model S 70D faster?
No. The 70D accepts a maximum of 11 kW at home. A 22 kW charger buys you no time at all. An 11 kW model is the better choice and costs you less.
