Hyundai IONIQ Electric 2016–2019 EV charger: Which one is the best fit?

The first-generation Hyundai IONIQ Electric, produced from 2016 to 2019, charges at home at a maximum of 6.6 kW using a single phase. This figure determines the choice of EV charger: a more powerful charger will not charge this car any faster. With a usable battery capacity of 28 kWh, the IONIQ can be fully charged in approximately 4.5 hours using a suitable charger. Which EV charger is suitable for the Hyundai IONIQ Electric 2016–2019?

This IONIQ charges using only one phase. A three-phase 11 or 22 kW EV charger therefore does not automatically provide a higher charging speed. When an 11 kW charger is connected at 3 × 16 amps, the car can use only one phase and charges at a maximum of approximately 3.7 kW. To achieve the full 6.6 kW, a single-phase supply of approximately 28 to 32 amps is required. You should therefore make sure that both the EV charger and the electrical installation support single-phase charging at 32 amps. An integrated MID meter is also recommended when the charged kilowatt-hours must be reimbursed by an employer or leasing company. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may additionally be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the Hyundai IONIQ Electric 2016–2019?

The theoretical calculation is straightforward: 28 kWh divided by 6.6 kW equals approximately 4.25 hours. When normal charging losses are taken into account, a complete charging session takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours in practice. When using a three-phase 11 kW charger connected at 3 × 16 amps, the single-phase IONIQ can draw a maximum of approximately 3.7 kW. A complete charging session will then take approximately 7.5 to 8 hours. An EV charger that can supply at least 6.6 kW on one phase is therefore the fastest solution for this model.

Whether you can achieve the maximum charging power also depends on the electrical connection and its protection. To charge at approximately 6.6 kW, the car needs around 28 to 32 amps on a single phase. Sufficient capacity must remain available for the other electrical appliances in the property. An EV charger with adjustable charging power or dynamic load balancing prevents the electrical connection from becoming overloaded. We always recommend having the connection installed by a certified installer. This is safer and may be important for your insurance coverage.
