Which EV charger is suitable for the Renault 5 E-Tech 52 kWh?
Because the Renault 5 E-Tech 52 kWh charges at a maximum of 11 kW AC, an 11 kW EV charger is the logical choice. It can recharge the battery conveniently overnight without you paying for charging power the vehicle cannot use. A 22 kW EV charger can also be used, but it will not charge this Renault any faster. It may still be useful if you plan to connect another electric vehicle with a higher AC charging capacity in the future.
If you need accurate and certified measurement of charging consumption, you should look for an integrated MID meter. A MID meter records exactly how many kilowatt-hours have been charged through the EV charger. This is particularly useful when you use the Renault 5 as a company or lease vehicle and want the home charging costs to be reimbursed by your employer or business. If the EV charger does not have an integrated MID meter, a separate MID-certified energy meter can be installed. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for participation in the ERE scheme. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the Renault 5 E-Tech 52 kWh?
The theoretical calculation is straightforward: 52 kWh divided by 11 kW is just under five hours. When normal charging losses are taken into account, you should allow approximately five to five and a half hours from almost empty to full. If you connect the vehicle in the evening, the battery will be fully charged well before the following morning.
To use the full 11 kW charging power, you need a 3-phase connection rated at 3 × 16 amps. If only a single-phase connection is available at home, the Renault 5 normally charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW. A full charge may then take approximately 14 to 16 hours.
On the road, the 52 kWh version charges through a CCS fast-charging connection at up to 100 kW DC. Under favourable conditions, the battery can be charged from 15 to 80% in around 30 minutes. The actual charging power depends on factors including battery temperature, state of charge and the output of the fast-charging station.
The Renault 5 E-Tech has a Type 2 connection. You need a separate Type 2 charging cable for an EV charger with a socket or when charging at a public AC charging station without a fixed cable.

Does the Renault 5 E-Tech 52 kWh need a 3-phase connection?
Yes, to use the full 11 kW charging power at home. This requires a 3-phase connection rated at 3 × 16 amps. On a single-phase connection, the vehicle normally charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW and takes considerably longer to recharge fully. A qualified electrician can check whether your electrical connection is suitable for 3-phase charging.
Why is a MID meter useful for the Renault 5?
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records charging consumption accurately and transparently. This is particularly useful when you use the Renault 5 as a company or lease vehicle and want the home charging costs to be reimbursed by your employer or business. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands. If the EV charger does not have an integrated MID meter, a separate MID-certified energy meter can be installed.
Can I charge the Renault 5 with a 22 kW EV charger?
Yes. A 22 kW EV charger can charge the Renault 5 E-Tech without any problem, but the vehicle accepts a maximum of 11 kW during AC charging. A 22 kW EV charger therefore does not reduce the charging time. It may still be useful if another electric vehicle with a higher AC charging capacity will be connected later.
Does the Renault 5 support bidirectional charging?
Depending on the version, the Renault 5 E-Tech supports functions such as V2L and may be technically prepared for additional bidirectional applications. The functions that are actually available depend on the vehicle, EV charger, software and local technical requirements. A V2G-ready EV charger alone therefore does not guarantee that bidirectional charging can be used immediately.
