NIO ET5 and ET7 100 kWh EV charger: which one fits best?

The NIO ET5 and the ET7 with the 100 kWh battery both charge at home at up to 11 kW on a three phase connection. That decides which charger you need: an 11 kW unit gets the maximum out of both sedans, while a 22 kW charger adds no speed here. Which EV charger suits the NIO ET5 or ET7 100 kWh?

Because both cars charge at up to 11 kW AC, an 11 kW charger is the logical choice: you charge overnight from empty to full without paying for speed the car cannot use anyway. A heavier 22 kW unit brings nothing here, since the onboard charger sets the ceiling.

Choose a charger with a MID meter, a certified kWh meter that records exactly what goes into the car. You need those certified readings whenever you have to prove your charging to someone else, an employer, a lease company, a landlord or an owners' association, because without them each of those settlements is only an estimate. In the Netherlands there is an extra reason: from 2026 private drivers can earn back up to 500 euros a year through their energy supplier, but only with a certified meter, and that scheme applies in the Netherlands only. A couple of features are worth weighing on a sedan you charge every night. How long does the NIO ET5 or ET7 100 kWh take to charge?

The charging time is the same for both cars: with an 11 kW charger you fill the 90 kWh usable battery from nearly empty to full in about 9 to 10 hours, charging losses included. Plug in at 23:00 and the car is ready in the morning. A top-up from say 30 to 80 percent takes around 4 hours, well within a night. On the road both NIOs charge quickly via DC at up to 127 kW, but for daily use at home 11 kW AC is exactly enough.

Do the recommended chargers for the NIO ET5 and ET7 have a MID meter?

The chargers we point to in our MID meter category all have a built-in MID certified kWh meter. That lets you record your charging precisely, settle business sessions and in the Netherlands qualify for the scheme that lets private drivers earn back up to 500 euros a year from 2026, which applies in the Netherlands only. A budget model without the meter misses those options.

Do you need a three phase connection for the NIO ET5 or ET7?

For the full 11 kW, yes. Both cars charge via Type 2 on a three phase connection at 3x16 amps. With single phase only, the maximum power is lower (3.7 kW at 1x16A, up to 7.4 kW on a heavy 1x32A connection) and a full charge takes longer. A qualified electrician or your local network operator can upgrade your connection to three phase.

Does the NIO ET7 charge faster than the ET5 with a charger?

No. Both charge at up to 11 kW AC at home and share the same 90 kWh usable battery, so the charging time at home is about 9 to 10 hours for both. Their WLTP range is close together and the home charging speed is identical.
