BMW i4 eDrive35 EV charger: which one fits best?

The BMW i4 eDrive35 is the entry-level i4, with rear-wheel drive and around 67 kWh of usable battery. That battery is smaller than the one in the eDrive40 and the M50. At home the eDrive35 charges at 11 kW over a three-phase connection. Three-phase means the car uses all three phases of your home supply at once. The eDrive35 also supports Plug and Charge through ISO 15118, the standard that lets car and charger recognise each other. Our BMW i4 EV charger page compares the other versions. The BMW EV charger overview covers every model in the range.

For the BMW i4 eDrive35 we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the BMW i4 eDrive35?

The eDrive35 charges at 11 kW at home. A three-phase 11 kW charger therefore uses the car's onboard charger, the unit inside the car that converts AC to DC, to its full capacity. A 22 kW model will not make it any faster. The ceiling sits in the car, not in the charger. Every i4 uses the same charge connector, so the charger type for a BMW i4 is simply Type 2. Any standard European home charger fits.

One feature is worth checking before you order: a MID meter. That is a certified kWh meter built into the charger itself. Because the meter sits in the charger, your charging use stays separate from the rest of your household consumption. And because it is certified, the meter is accurate to a set standard, so you see exactly what charging at home costs you. We stock chargers with a MID meter at 11 kW and at 22 kW.

An EV charger with an app adds a second layer of control. The eDrive35 starts a session on its own through Plug and Charge, so use the app for the things the car cannot do: setting a charging schedule and checking what a session cost. Both features show up across our range of home EV chargers, so that is the shortest route to a shortlist.

How long does the BMW i4 eDrive35 take to charge?

With roughly 67 kWh usable, the sum is straightforward. Divide 67 kWh by 11 kW and you land on about six hours for a full charge. Plug the car in during the evening and you leave with a full battery in the morning. On the road the eDrive35 takes up to around 180 kW at a DC fast charger. A short coffee stop puts a serious amount of range back in.

Wallbox Discounter also has charging information for the other versions of the BMW i4:

Always let a qualified electrician make the connection to your fuse box. A professional connection keeps the work safe, and most insurers expect the job to be signed off by a qualified electrician. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. We ship our chargers worldwide, but the installation service covers those three countries only.

Frequently asked questions

Does the BMW i4 eDrive35 need a three-phase connection?

For the full 11 kW you need a three-phase supply of 3 x 16 amps. On a single-phase supply the eDrive35 charges at up to 7.4 kW. A full charge then simply takes longer. Whether three-phase power is available at your address depends on your country and your existing connection. Your electricity network operator or your installer can tell you what is possible.

Does the BMW i4 eDrive35 support Plug and Charge?

Yes. The i4 eDrive35 supports ISO 15118, the communication standard between car and charger. Your car identifies itself at a compatible charger and charging starts on its own. You do not need a charge card or an app.
