Smart EQ fortwo EV charger: overview per version

The Smart EQ fortwo is a compact city car with a small battery of 16.7 kWh net. That means it is full again quickly at home, even without a high-powered EV charger. As standard, every version charges at 4.6 kW on a single phase. The cabrio and the coupe were also available with an optional 22 kW onboard charger. That is the charger built into the car, and it sets the maximum AC charging power. Which EV charger suits you best therefore depends mainly on which onboard charger your fortwo has. Our Smart EV charger overview covers the other models as well.

For the Smart EQ fortwo with the standard onboard charger we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Does your fortwo have the optional 22 kW onboard charger? Then a 22 kW EV charger uses its full power, provided you have a three-phase 32 amp connection. Not sure which one your car has? Check your vehicle documents or the charging settings in the display.

Versions of the Smart EQ fortwo

The Smart EQ fortwo comes as a cabrio and as a coupe. The battery is the same size in both. What differs is the onboard charger: 4.6 kW as standard or 22 kW as an option. We have a separate page with charging advice for your exact version.

Which EV charger suits the Smart EQ fortwo?

Because the battery is small, the Smart EQ fortwo does not need a high-powered EV charger. The standard onboard charger draws 20 amps on one phase, which is 4.6 kW. A home connection can have one phase or three, and this car uses only one of them. A single-phase 7.4 kW EV charger therefore gives it the full 4.6 kW. On an 11 kW EV charger, which supplies 16 amps per phase, it charges at 3.7 kW.

A built-in MID meter is worth considering. This is a certified kWh meter that measures the electricity you charge separately from the rest of your household. You know exactly what charging costs, and you have a verifiable record if your employer reimburses home charging.

In our range, all EV chargers with a MID meter are three-phase models from 11 kW upwards. We have no single-phase 7.4 kW charger with a built-in MID meter. For the standard fortwo, a 22 kW model combines both. On a three-phase 32 amp connection it still gives the car its full 4.6 kW on one phase.

On our 11 kW EV chargers the version with the 22 kW onboard charger charges at 11 kW. The Smart EQ fortwo uses a Type 2 connection, like most modern EV chargers. With a tethered charger the cable is already attached. With a socket model you use a Type 2 charging cable, which also works at public charge points.

How long does the Smart EQ fortwo take to charge?

You calculate the charging time by dividing the net battery (16.7 kWh) by the charging power. With the standard 4.6 kW onboard charger, that gives about 3.5 hours from empty to full. Charging losses add time in practice, so count on around 4.5 hours. On an 11 kW EV charger the standard fortwo charges at 3.7 kW, which adds roughly another hour.

With the optional 22 kW onboard charger on a 22 kW EV charger, the calculation gives about 45 minutes. Including charging losses it takes just under an hour. A city car mostly charges at home overnight, so even the slow version is ready in good time.

Frequently asked questions about the Smart EQ fortwo

Do I need a 22 kW EV charger for the Smart EQ fortwo?

Not with the standard onboard charger. It charges at 4.6 kW on one phase, so a 7.4 kW EV charger already gives it full speed. Does your cabrio or coupe have the optional 22 kW onboard charger? Then a 22 kW EV charger does make full use of it. An 11 kW EV charger works with both chargers, but the standard one charges on it at 3.7 kW.

Why is a MID meter important for the Smart EQ fortwo?

A MID-certified kWh meter records the electricity you charge at home accurately and separately from your household use. You always know what charging costs you. It also gives you a verifiable basis if your employer or leasing company reimburses home charging. Keep in mind that the MID meters in our range sit in three-phase models from 11 kW upwards.

Do I need to have the EV charger installed?

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer and important for your insurance. Would you like your EV charger including installation? We arrange that in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. In the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium you order it together with your charger. In Germany it starts with a free quotation, which you request via our installation page.
