Hyundai IONIQ EV charger: overview by version

The first Hyundai IONIQ (2016 to 2022) charges at home through a type 2 port on alternating current, or AC. Unlike many newer EVs, this IONIQ does not take 11 kW. It charges on a single phase, up to 7.2 kW. The original IONIQ came in three versions: fully electric, as a plug-in hybrid and as a regular hybrid. Choosing the right EV charger for the Hyundai IONIQ

The IONIQ takes its power over one phase. A 7.4 kW charger delivers 32 A on that single phase. That is exactly what the onboard charger of the IONIQ accepts, so you get the full speed the car is capable of.

An 11 kW charger sounds stronger, but it spreads 16 A over three phases. A car that charges on one phase uses only one of them. The IONIQ would draw 3.7 kW there and charge about twice as slowly. A 22 kW EV charger is the better three-phase route, because it supplies 32 A per phase. The IONIQ then keeps its full 7.2 kW, and the charger is ready for a faster next car. Do note that 22 kW asks for a three-phase connection at home.

Two features are worth checking at 7.4 kW. Load balancing lets the charger measure what the rest of your home is using. It then lowers the charging power before the main fuse reaches its limit. An EV charger with an app lets you set charging times from your phone. That fits the IONIQ, because a full charge runs through the night anyway.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It records exactly how much power went into the car at home. Every charger with a MID meter in our range works on three phases, so 7.4 kW is not an option. Charging times for the Hyundai IONIQ

Hyundai puts a full charge of the 38.3 kWh IONIQ Electric at 6 hours and 5 minutes on 7.2 kW. That is a little above capacity divided by power, because charging is never fully efficient. The older 28 kWh version charges at 6.6 kW and needs about five hours, losses included. The plug-in hybrid takes roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes at 3.3 kW, measured on the usable part of its 8.9 kWh battery.

On an 11 kW three-phase charger the picture changes. The IONIQ Electric then draws 3.7 kW and needs around twelve hours for a full battery. A heavier charger does not make this car faster, because the onboard charger sets the ceiling.

The IONIQ charges at home through a type 2 port on AC. At home you plug in through the fixed connection of the charger. If you also want to charge the car elsewhere, a separate type 2 charging cable comes in handy.
