Your home charging speed is set by the onboard charger in your car, not by the EV charger itself. One EV takes up to 11 kW at home, another reaches 22 kW. How do you choose an EV charger for your electric car?

The onboard charger in your car converts alternating current from the socket into direct current for the battery. This onboard charger sets a limit on how fast you can charge at home. So how many kW your charger can deliver matters little if your car cannot take that speed. Most electric cars charge at 11 kW, which matches a three-phase connection in your meter box. That means three live wires instead of one. Some models, often premium EVs, reach 22 kW. Plug-in hybrids usually charge on one phase at 3.7 kW, because they have a smaller battery.

For most drivers, an 11 kW EV charger is the logical choice. Drive a car that can take 22 kW and have a heavy three-phase connection? Then a 22 kW EV charger only makes sense. On your car brand page you see, per version, which power your car really uses.

When choosing, look for a built-in MID meter. Almost every EV charger we recommend has one as standard. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records your charging accurately. This is no detail. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back up to 500 euro per year on home charging. This works through the ERE scheme, a Dutch energy tax rebate, but only if the charger has a certified kWh meter. Buy a charger without a MID meter now and you leave that money on the table. In our view a MID meter is no longer a luxury, it is simply smart.

How do I know which charging power my car can take?

Does my EV charger need to be installed by an electrician?
