A 3-phase charging cable charges your electric car three times faster than a 1-phase cable at the same current. Most 3-phase charging cables use the Mennekes connection, also known as Type 2. With 11 kW or 22 kW of power, you can charge quickly enough at home or on the road for every daily drive. At Wallboxdiscounter, you can choose from 3-phase charging cables from Loady, Ratio, Myenergi and Sekraft, competitively priced and shipped today when ordered before 15:00.

The choice between 11 kW and 22 kW depends on your EV charger and the onboard charger of your car. If you have a 3-phase connection at home or often charge publicly, you make the most of the speed of a 3-phase cable.

Difference between a 1-phase and 3-phase charging cable

A 1-phase cable uses one live wire and charges at 3.7 kW with 16 A, or 7.4 kW with 32 A. A 3-phase cable uses three live wires at the same time and delivers three times more power at the same current: 11 kW (16 A) or 22 kW (32 A).

For most Dutch EV drivers, 3-phase 16 A (11 kW) is the sweet spot. Almost all modern EVs have an 11 kW onboard charger, and home EV chargers and public charging points support this power as standard. If you drive a car that supports 22 kW, a 22 kW cable also lets you use faster public charging points.

Not sure about the onboard charger of your car? Check the specifications in your manual or give our advisors a quick call. A 22 kW cable also works perfectly on an 11 kW EV charger, so if you buy one, you are future-proof if you later drive a car with a faster onboard charger.

What length 3-phase charging cable do you need?

  • 3 to 5 metres: for fixed home EV chargers close to the parking space
  • 7 to 8 metres: standard size for public charging and flexible home use
  • 10 metres: for a double driveway or EV charger on the side of the house
  • 15 to 20 metres: for complex situations or multiple parking spaces

A longer cable is not necessarily better. It is heavier, takes up more storage space and costs more. So measure carefully from the charging point to the charging port in advance. View the full range under charging cable type 2. Or view the complete charging cable range for all types, lengths and power ratings.

What should you look for when buying?

Pay attention to certification (CE, TÜV), the cable sheath (TPU remains flexible in cold weather) and the warranty. Quality brands such as Ratio and Loady offer 2 to 3 years of warranty. If you want fixed charging at home, combine it with an 11 kW EV charger or a 22 kW EV charger.

Frequently asked questions about 3-phase charging cables

Can I use a 22 kW cable on an 11 kW EV charger?

Yes, a 22 kW cable works without any problem on any EV charger with lower power. The cable will then automatically charge at 11 kW. The other way around does not work: an 11 kW cable cannot deliver 22 kW.

Does a 3-phase cable also charge on a 1-phase connection?

Yes. A 3-phase charging cable automatically falls back to 1-phase charging if the EV charger or the car only supports 1-phase. You lose speed, but the cable works as normal.
