You need a type 1 charging cable if your car has a type 1 connection, also known as SAE J1772. This is the standard mainly found on older Asian and American EVs and plug-in hybrids, such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the Nissan Leaf before 2018, the Opel Ampera, the Citroën C-Zero and the first-generation Toyota Prius PHEV. At Wallboxdiscounter, you can buy a charging cable type 1 from just €169, with the best price for this increasingly rare standard.

When do you need an EV charging cable type 1?

Since 2014, type 2 (Mennekes) has been the European standard, but there are still thousands of EVs in Europe with a type 1 charging port. You can recognise your car by the charging port: type 1 has five contact points and a clear “key shape”. Type 2 has seven contact points and a flat upper side.

Cars that require a type 1 charging cable include:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (2013-2018)
  • Nissan Leaf (2011-2018)
  • Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt
  • Renault Fluence Z.E.
  • Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (first generation)
  • Citroën C-Zero and Peugeot iOn
  • Ford Focus Electric (pre-2019)

Buy charging cable type 1: 1-phase, 3.7 or 7.4 kW

Type 1 only works on 1-phase. So you cannot charge 3-phase with it, even if your EV charger supports 3-phase charging. That makes the choice simple:

PowerCurrentCharging time (indication, 40 kWh battery)Starting price
3.7 kW16A, 1-phaseapprox. 11 hours€169,-
7.4 kW32A, 1-phaseapprox. 5.5 hours€209

The most affordable option is the eRock Next type 1 cable of 10 metres (€169), with 3.7 kW. For faster charging, choose the Loady type 1 to type 2 cable of 7.4 kW (€209). Always check the specifications of your car, as some older models charge at a maximum of 3.7 kW and therefore do not benefit from a 7.4 kW cable.

Difference between type 1 and type 2 charging

The main difference: type 1 charges at a maximum of 7.4 kW on 1-phase, while type 2 goes up to 22 kW on 3-phase. Type 1 also does not support load balancing, which is standard with type 2. If you are considering a new EV, choose a model with a type 2 connection. Still have a type 1 car? Then a charging cable type 1 to type 2 does exactly what you need: connecting your car to a modern EV charger with type 2 socket.

Frequently asked questions about type 1 charging cables

Can I use a type 1 cable with any EV charger?

Almost every public and home EV charger in Europe now has a type 2 socket. With a type 1 to type 2 cable, you connect your car to those EV chargers. A pure type 1 cable only works on charging stations with a type 1 plug, which are rare in Europe.

How many brands still make type 1 cables?

The range is limited, because the market is switching to type 2. At Wallboxdiscounter, you will find reliable cables from Loady and eRock Next, all with a 2-year warranty.

Will my Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV charge more slowly because of a type 1 cable?

No, the cable does not limit the charging capacity. The Outlander PHEV charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW from the car itself. A 7.4 kW cable works, but does not charge faster than the onboard charger allows.
