How long does the BMW i4 xDrive40 take to charge?

With an 11 kW charger you need around 7.5 hours for a nearly empty battery: 81.3 kWh usable divided by 11 kW. Plug the car in around 11 pm and it is full again in the morning. For a normal daily trip you only top up for a couple of hours. A rapid charger is much quicker on the road, but 11 kW stays the ceiling at home for this version.

The i4 xDrive40 uses a type 2 connector, like almost every modern charger. At home you charge through the fixed cable or the socket of the unit. If you also want to charge elsewhere, a separate type 2 charging cable is useful to keep in the boot.

Does the BMW i4 xDrive40 need a three-phase connection?

Yes, you need a three-phase supply of 3x16 amps to reach the full 11 kW. On a single-phase supply the result depends on the amperage. At 16 amps the car charges at 3.7 kW, and at 32 amps it reaches 7.4 kW. Both are noticeably slower than three-phase charging.
