The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid charges at home at a maximum of 3.7 kW on a single phase. The car sets the ceiling here, not the charger: a heavier model will not fill it any faster. A simple charger is therefore enough, and the 17 kWh battery is full again in about 4.5 hours. Our overview of Honda EV chargers shows the other models as well.

For the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid?

Because the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid draws 3.7 kW at most, every modern home charger is more than enough. You do not need a 3-phase connection for this car. A single-phase supply delivers its full charging speed, so a simple charger and a standard connection will do.

An 11 kW model is still worth considering, and for one reason only: your next car. It will not charge the Clarity any faster, because the onboard charger stops at 3.7 kW. But a full electric car often does use the whole 11 kW, and you already have the charger. That only makes sense if you have a 3-phase supply at home, or plan to get one.

If you go that route, pick a charger with a socket rather than a fixed cable. You can then use it for different cars. The Clarity has a Type 1 plug. To use a socket charger you need a Type 1 charging cable.

Also look for a built-in MID meter. That is a certified kWh meter, and it records exactly how much electricity goes into your car. You then know what charging at home costs you, separately from the rest of your household use. In our range a built-in MID meter only comes on 3-phase chargers, so it fits the 11 kW route if you take it. The charging stations with MID meter show which models have one.

Another feature worth knowing about is load balancing. The charger measures how much power your fuse box has left, then turns the charging power down automatically. Your washing machine, dishwasher and oven can run at the same time without tripping the circuit breaker. Our EV chargers with dynamic load balancing all do this.

We can arrange the installation for you in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. Outside those three countries we do not install, although we ship almost all of our products worldwide. Wherever you live, have a qualified electrician make the connection: it is safer and it matters for your insurance. Local rules differ from country to country, so check what applies in yours.

How long does the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid take to charge?

The sum is simple. A 17 kWh battery divided by 3.7 kW comes to roughly 4.5 hours for a full charge. Plug the car in during the evening and it is ready well before morning, even on an ordinary single-phase supply. A heavier charger changes nothing here, because the Clarity's onboard charger sets the limit. That limit also applies away from home: on a public charging point the car still takes 3.7 kW.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid need a 3-phase EV charger?

No. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid charges on a single phase at a maximum of 3.7 kW. A simple charger is enough, and a standard single-phase supply covers it. An 11 kW 3-phase model works too, but it will not charge this car any faster. Choose it only if you expect a quicker EV later on.

Which charging socket does the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid use?

The Clarity uses a Type 1 plug, also known as Yazaki. Most chargers in Europe have a Type 2 connection, so the two do not match directly. That does not cost you speed: the car stays capped at 3.7 kW either way.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter?

You do not have to, but it helps. A certified MID meter records your charging at home down to the kilowatt hour. You then know what the car costs you to run, separately from your household consumption. Several of our EV chargers for home use come with one built in.
