Peugeot 308 Hybrid EV charger: which one fits best?

The Peugeot 308 Hybrid with the 12.4 kWh battery is a plug-in hybrid. At home it charges at 3.7 kW as standard. A 7.4 kW on-board charger, the charger built into the car, was available at extra cost. Both figures stay modest, because the battery is small and fills quickly. Plug the car in during the evening and it is ready the next morning. Peugeot updated this plug-in hybrid in 2025 with a larger battery and a stronger on-board charger, so the figures below describe the earlier version. Which EV charger suits the Peugeot 308 Hybrid?

The 308 Hybrid draws 3.7 kW at home, or 7.4 kW with the optional on-board charger. Neither figure gains anything from an expensive fast unit. What counts is a reliable charger you can keep for years. It should still suit you after you move to a fully electric car that charges faster. An 11 kW charger fits that plan well. It runs on three phases but works on a single phase supply too, and the standard 308 Hybrid takes its full 3.7 kW either way.

There is one thing to check first if your 308 has the 7.4 kW option. That charger pulls 32 A on a single phase. An 11 kW three phase unit gives it only one phase, at 16 A, so it would charge at 3.7 kW. That is half the speed you paid for. In that case a single phase 7.4 kW EV charger is the better match, unless you expect a three phase car soon.

Look at the built-in MID meter while you compare. MID is the European Measuring Instruments Directive. A certified kWh meter records exactly how much energy the car takes. You then know what charging at home costs you, apart from the rest of your electricity bill.

In our range that meter sits mainly on the 22 kW models, and at 11 kW the choice is narrower. On a single phase 7.4 kW charger it is not offered at all. Compare the chargers with a MID meter to see where it does sit.

Two features matter more day to day on a car like this. App control lets you start a session or read your consumption from your phone, and those models sit under EV chargers with an app. A charger with dynamic load balancing measures what your fuse box has to spare. It lowers the charging power when the house needs it, so nothing trips.

How long does the Peugeot 308 Hybrid take to charge?

The sum is straightforward. The usable pack holds 10.5 kWh, which divided by 3.7 kW comes to just under three hours. Charging losses bring that to about three and a half hours in practice. With the optional 7.4 kW on-board charger the battery is full in roughly two hours. Both fit comfortably inside a night. With 60 kilometres of electric range you cover your daily trips emission-free. The petrol engine takes over on longer runs. A charger that goes faster than your on-board charger adds nothing here, because the car sets the ceiling.

Does the Peugeot 308 Hybrid need a three phase charger?

No. The 308 Hybrid charges on a single phase. That is 3.7 kW as standard, or up to 7.4 kW with the optional on-board charger. A single phase connection is therefore enough. If you still choose an 11 kW charger, the standard car takes its full 3.7 kW from one of the three phases. With the 7.4 kW option it is the other way round: that version drops to 3.7 kW on an 11 kW charger, so a single phase 7.4 kW unit charges it faster.

Why does a MID meter matter for the 308 Hybrid?

A certified MID meter records precisely how much electricity you charge at home. You can then separate charging costs from your household use and see what the car actually costs to run. The reading is certified, so the figure is not an estimate. Without such a meter you are left guessing.
