Toyota RAV4 EV charger: which one fits best?

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid charges at home with 6.6 kW. It does that single-phase, so it draws its current from one of the three phases in your fuse box. For a plug-in hybrid that is a high figure. It only pays off with a charger that hands over the full 6.6 kW on that one phase.

This page describes the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid built between 2020 and 2025, with the 18.1 kWh battery. The generation launched for 2026 charges differently, so the figures below do not apply to it. Our Toyota overview covers the other plug-in and electric Toyota models, each on its own charging page.

For the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger fits the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid?

Start with the phase. The RAV4 takes 6.6 kW from a single phase. A single-phase charger of 7.4 kW therefore hands it everything it can use.

AC, or alternating current, is what comes out of the charger. The car's onboard charger converts it to DC, or direct current, which is the form the battery stores. This RAV4 has no DC rapid charging, so it always charges through that onboard charger.

An 11 kW charger works differently. It is three-phase and delivers 3 x 16 amps (A). The RAV4 uses just one of those phases, so it stops at 3.7 kW. That is well under the 6.6 kW the car can take. An 11 kW charger therefore charges this RAV4 slower, not faster.

An 11 kW charger can still be the better buy. If your next car charges three-phase, 11 kW EV chargers are the more future-proof choice. Weigh the slower charging today against a charger that still fits the car after this one.

One thing our 7.4 kW range does not offer is a built-in MID meter. That is a calibrated kWh meter sitting inside the charger itself. Because it sits there, it records your charging separately from the rest of your household use. And because it is calibrated, the reading is legally valid rather than an estimate. You will find this meter in our EV chargers with a MID meter, in the 11 kW and 22 kW ranges.

The format matters too. Our EV chargers for home use are the models made for mounting at home. Some have a cable permanently attached, others a Type 2 socket on the unit itself. At home you charge straight from the charger itself.

How long does the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid take to charge?

With the 18.1 kWh battery, the RAV4 is full in roughly 2.5 hours on a 7.4 kW charger. It never draws more than 6.6 kW of that. Plug it in after dinner and the battery is ready before you go to bed.

A normal household socket delivers far less power. Charging then stretches to around 7.5 hours. For a car you charge every day, a fixed charger saves about five hours per charge.

Does the Toyota RAV4 need a three-phase connection?

It is not required. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid charges on one phase at 6.6 kW, so a single-phase connection covers it. Three-phase can still be worth having, because it prepares you for a future car. Your RAV4 would charge at 3.7 kW on it, though, so slower than it does now.

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer, and it matters for your insurance. They size the circuit so it stays within what your supply can carry.

We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and nowhere else. In the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium you order it together with the charger. In Germany it runs through a free quotation instead. We can ship worldwide, but the installation service stays inside those three countries.
