A Double charging station with load balancing allows you to charge two electric vehicles simultaneously using a single charging station, while the software automatically distributes the available power between both connectors. No risk of a tripped main fuse, no expensive grid connection upgrade and no arguments about who gets to charge first. At Wallbox Discounter, you will find double charging stations from Alfen and EVBox, suitable for homes with two EVs, small business locations and apartment association parking areas. You can order the charging station separately or including installation.

  • Two Type 2 sockets in one charging station, up to 22 kW per socket
  • Dynamic load balancing automatically distributes available power
  • Integrated MID meter, suitable for ERE registration and business reimbursement
  • Competitively priced and shipped from the Netherlands

How does a Double charging station with load balancing work?

The charging station features two charging points connected to a shared power supply. When two vehicles are connected, the station distributes the available power between both vehicles. If only one vehicle is charging, it receives the full available charging capacity. This principle is known as load balancing.

With dynamic load balancing, the charging station continuously monitors electricity consumption within your electrical installation, often through an energy meter or the P1 port of your smart meter. Is your oven or heat pump consuming a large amount of power? The charging station will temporarily reduce charging capacity to prevent the main fuse from tripping. As soon as household consumption decreases, charging power automatically increases again. No manual adjustments are required.

Why is this combination so powerful?

Charging two EVs simultaneously from a standard electrical connection is normally challenging. A 3-phase 25A connection can provide a maximum of 17.3 kW, while the rest of the household also requires electricity. Without load balancing, you may need to upgrade your grid connection to 3 x 35A or 3 x 40A, resulting in significantly higher annual network costs.

A Double charging station with load balancing solves this problem. The charger only uses power that is available at that moment and intelligently distributes it between both vehicles. Two vehicles may charge slightly slower, but they can charge safely without overloading the electrical installation. One charging station, one installation, one cable route and two charging points.

Who is a Double charging station with load balancing suitable for?

A double charging station is particularly suitable for three common situations:

  • Households with two electric vehicles. Charge both vehicles overnight using your existing 3-phase connection without requiring a grid upgrade.
  • Small business locations. Two company vehicles can charge at the same location while charging sessions are tracked separately thanks to the MID meter.
  • Apartment associations and shared parking facilities. One charging station serves two parking spaces while usage can be assigned to individual users through RFID cards or charging cards.

For business locations and apartment associations, the integrated MID meter is particularly valuable because charging costs can be accurately allocated to individual users.

Models in the range

For this niche category, we keep a compact selection in stock. Both models support 3-phase charging, dynamic load balancing and include an integrated MID-certified meter:

ModelPower per socketConnection typeKey features
Alfen Eve Double Pro-Lineup to 22 kW2x Type 2 socketMID meter, RFID, OCPP 1.6J, colour display
EVBox BusinessLine Satelliteup to 22 kW2x Type 2 socketMID meter, suitable as an extension for existing EVBox installations

The Alfen Eve Double Pro-Line is the workhorse for professional installations: a robust Dutch-built charging station featuring a colour display and extensive OCPP functionality. The EVBox BusinessLine Satellite is the most affordable option in the range and is especially attractive when expanding an existing EVBox charging infrastructure.

Specifications and connection requirements

A Double charging station with load balancing is typically connected to a 3-phase electrical supply. This provides sufficient capacity to charge two vehicles simultaneously. With a 3 x 25A connection, the charging station can dynamically distribute the available power, while a 3 x 35A connection offers even more charging capacity.

To achieve the maximum charging speed of 22 kW per socket, a 3-phase 32A connection is required. If your vehicle is equipped with an 11 kW onboard charger, it will automatically charge at its maximum supported speed. The charging station automatically adapts to the capabilities of the vehicle.

For new installations, we always recommend an inspection of the electrical installation beforehand. An installer can determine whether the main fuse is sufficiently rated and which cable sizes are required.

MID meter and ERE registration

All Double charging stations with load balancing in this category are equipped with a MID-certified kWh meter. MID stands for Measuring Instruments Directive, the European standard for certified energy measurement. This allows charged electricity consumption to be recorded accurately and legally.

For businesses, apartment associations and users participating in ERE registration, this is particularly important. Consumption data can be used to correctly allocate charging costs and provide the documentation required for reimbursement schemes and incentive programmes.

Installing a Double charging station with load balancing

Installing a double charging station is more complex than installing a single charger. Besides mounting the charging station itself, load balancing must be configured correctly and communication with the energy monitoring system needs to be set up. For this reason, installation by a certified electrician is strongly recommended.

Wallbox Discounter offers the possibility to order your charging station including installation. The installer first evaluates the site, reviews the grid connection and prepares a quotation for the complete installation and commissioning process.

Installation costs depend on factors such as cable distance, the distance to the electrical cabinet, any required excavation work and the available grid capacity. Through our page EV Charger including installation you can request a customised quotation without obligation.

Frequently asked questions about a Double charging station with load balancing

Can I charge two vehicles at full speed simultaneously?

That depends on your grid connection and the electricity consumption of the building. If sufficient capacity is available, both vehicles can charge at a high rate simultaneously. Load balancing ensures that available power is used as efficiently as possible.

Do I need to upgrade my grid connection?

In many cases, no. This is exactly what load balancing is designed for. The charging station automatically adjusts charging power to match the available capacity, preventing overload of the electrical installation.

Can charging sessions be tracked separately for each vehicle?

Yes. Thanks to the integrated MID meter and RFID support, most models can register electricity consumption separately per user, vehicle or charging card. This is particularly useful for businesses and apartment associations.

Is a double charging station more cost-effective than two separate chargers?

In many situations, yes. Because two charging points are combined into one housing, installation, foundation and cabling costs are often lower than installing two separate charging stations.

Is a Double charging station with load balancing suitable for home use?

Absolutely. Households with two electric vehicles benefit significantly from a Double charging station with load balancing. Both vehicles can charge simultaneously without requiring an unnecessary upgrade of the home's electrical connection.
