The Honda Clarity Electric charges at home at a maximum of 6.6 kW AC, a modest figure that matches its 25.5 kWh battery. That puts the sedan back at full within an evening, even on an ordinary home charger. One point deserves attention up front: the Clarity Electric is an American model with a Type 1 (J1772) inlet, while our chargers use the Type 2 socket that is standard across Europe. Which EV charger suits the Honda Clarity Electric?
The charger type you need follows from two things: the 6.6 kW ceiling and the Type 1 inlet. Because the Clarity Electric accepts no more than 6.6 kW AC, you have no reason to buy a heavy 22 kW unit. An 11 kW charger with a Type 2 socket is more than enough and stays useful for a next, faster EV. You connect the car with a separate Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable, and since the car draws a maximum of 6.6 kW a 32 amp cable rated for 7.4 kW is comfortably enough. Beyond that, two features are worth thinking about.
The first is a calibrated kWh meter. A charger with a built in MID meter records exactly how much energy went into the car, which is the proof an employer or leasing company wants before reimbursing a charging session. Drivers in the Netherlands have a further reason: a national scheme pays back up to 500 euro a year on home charging and accepts only a calibrated meter. That scheme is available in the Netherlands only.
The second is app control. The Clarity charges in under four hours, so you have room to place that session wherever electricity is cheapest. The sum is straightforward: 25.5 kWh of battery divided by 6.6 kW of charging power works out at roughly 3.5 to 4 hours for a full charge. The car always charges at up to 6.6 kW, whether the charger on the wall is rated at 11 kW or 22 kW. Plug the Clarity in at 11pm and it is full well before morning. For daily use that is more than enough.

Does the Honda Clarity Electric need a charger with a MID meter?
The car does not need one, but you do as soon as you want your charging costs reimbursed. A MID certified kWh meter is calibrated, so its reading counts as evidence towards an employer or a leasing company. In the Netherlands a calibrated meter also unlocks a national scheme worth up to 500 euro a year, which applies in the Netherlands only.
Does the charger have to be installed by an electrician?
