Cupra Born 82 kWh EV charger: which one fits best?

The Cupra Born 82 kWh carries a 77 kWh usable battery, the largest of the standard Born versions. At home you charge this car with a maximum of 11 kW alternating current, because that is what the on-board charger accepts. A bigger battery does not mean faster charging, but it does mean a longer charging time. A charger that quietly tops the car up overnight is the sensible choice here. For the Cupra Born 82 kWh we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which charger suits the Cupra Born 82 kWh?

The Born 82 kWh reaches 11 kW at home, so an 11 kW charger uses the on-board charger to the full. A faster 22 kW unit adds nothing here, because the car sets the maximum. Two features are worth weighing up at this power level, and our range carries both for 11 kW.

The first is an MID meter, a calibrated kWh meter built into the charger. It records exactly how much electricity goes into your car. That way you see what home charging costs you, separately from the rest of your household use. Our charging stations with an MID meter start at this power level.

The second is dynamic load balancing. The charger reads what the rest of your home is using and lowers its own power when demand peaks. With a battery this size the car stays on the charger for hours. Your connection is loaded for longer than with a small battery. You will find it in our EV chargers with dynamic load balancing.

The Cupra Born charges through a Type 2 connector. At home you use the cable of the charger itself. A separate Type 2 charging cable is only needed if you also want to charge the car elsewhere. All of these units sit in our range of EV home chargers.

How long does the Cupra Born 82 kWh take to charge?

Divide the usable battery of 77 kWh by the charging power of 11 kW. That comes to about 7 hours from empty to full. In practice you count on 7 to 8 hours because of charging losses. Charge overnight and the Born stands ready every morning with a full battery. A top-up for your daily trips takes far less, because you only add what you used.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Cupra Born 82 kWh need a three-phase connection?

You need three phases for the full 11 kW. On a single-phase connection the car draws 32 A on one phase, which comes to 7.4 kW. A full charge then takes around 12 hours instead of 8. A qualified electrician can map out what your fuse box allows.

Do I need a charger with an MID meter?

You need one as soon as you want to know precisely what charging costs you. A calibrated meter records your charging sessions apart from the rest of your electricity use. Without it you charge just as fast, but you only see one figure on your household bill.

Should I have the charger installed?

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer and it matters for your insurance. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and nowhere else. In the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium you order it with your charger. In Germany it runs through a free quote. We ship worldwide, but installation stays limited to those three countries.
