Ford C-Max Energi EV charger: Which one is the best fit?
The Ford C-Max Energi is a plug-in hybrid with a relatively small battery and a maximum AC charging power of approximately 3.3 kW. You therefore do not need a particularly powerful EV charger to charge the car fully. A future-proof charger can still be a sensible choice if you expect to switch to a fully electric car later. The C-Max Energi was not officially sold on the European market and is now out of production, so examples available here are generally imported vehicles with an American Type 1 connection. For the Ford C-Max Energi, we recommend an EV charger with a Type 2 socket. This allows you to use a separate Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable and continue using the charger if you later switch to a car with a Type 2 connection.

Which EV charger suits the Ford C-Max Energi?
The C-Max Energi charges at no more than 3.3 kW, however powerful your charger is. For this car alone, a lighter single-phase charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers would do. We still often recommend an 11 kW charger. Switch to a fully electric car later and you are ready straight away, with nothing to replace.
A built-in MID meter is worth considering. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It measures your charging separately from your household use, so you know exactly what home charging costs. In our range, chargers with a built-in MID meter are three-phase models. The lighter 7.4 kW chargers come without one.

How long does the Ford C-Max Energi take to charge?
A full charge takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, according to Ford's own figures. The battery is small, so you are quickly back to full electric range. A more powerful charger does not charge this car faster, because the C-Max Energi never accepts more than 3.3 kW.
Do you have to charge the Ford C-Max Energi? Strictly speaking, no: as a plug-in hybrid it also runs on its petrol engine. Charging does let you drive the first stretch on electricity. With this small battery, a regular socket is not much slower. A fixed charger is still safer and handier for daily use.
Which connector does the Ford C-Max Energi have?
The Ford C-Max Energi has a Type 1 connector. Most chargers in Europe have a Type 2 socket or a fixed Type 2 cable. A fixed Type 2 cable does not fit this car directly. Choose a charger with a socket instead and connect the car with a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable. We always recommend having the charger connected by a qualified electrician, as that is the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions
Is an 11 kW charger useful for a Ford C-Max Energi?
Not for the car itself, because it charges at a maximum of 3.3 kW. An 11 kW charger does make sense if you expect to switch to a fully electric car later. Then you won't need to replace anything.
Why does a MID meter matter?
A MID-certified kWh meter records your charging accurately and separately from the rest of your household. That way you know exactly how much electricity your car uses at home and what it costs you.
